FKA Twigs<\/a>\u2018 album Magdalene<\/em>, her followup to 2014\u2019s LP1<\/em>, is out now. To coincide with its release, the U.K. performer sat down for an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple\u2019s Beats 1 Radio in which she discussed her maturity on her new record<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always written from a really honest place, but an honest place at 22 or 23 with your life experience is different to an honest place [now],\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s one thing showing people your heart when you\u2019re feeling sexy and sassy and you\u2019re 22, 23 running around New York like miss thing \u2014 I\u2019m discovering my sexuality, that\u2019s hot. Know what I mean? But then it\u2019s another thing where like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m broken now.’\u201d<\/p>\n

She revealed that she considers the bridge on \u201cSad Day\u201d to be the most emotional part of the album for her, and discussed all the media attention she got surrounding her very public relationship and breakup with actor Robert Pattinson.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really had nothing to do with me and I knew that at the time. And I know that now,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd you know that phrase, \u2018Your monkeys, your circus\u2019? Like your monkeys, your circus. It kind of felt like that. And I don\u2019t have any monkeys anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now that FKA Twigs has healed from the laparoscopic surgery she underwent<\/a> in December 2017, she\u2019s practicing a new talent that she\u2019s added to her roster of music, dance and swordfighting: Wushu martial arts, which she discovered through the director Chloe Zhao (The Rider<\/em>).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe kind of had quite a fun but lonely and disastrous Cannes Film Festival together a few years ago,\u201d Twigs recalled. \u201cChloe was a relatively new director then; she\u2019s now going on and is directing an incredible Marvel movie. We just ended up hanging out together for the whole of Cannes, sort of like two misfits. And she\u2019s Chinese and she said to me like, \u2018Oh, you should have a look at Wushu, with your movement and stuff, I think you\u2019d really love it.\u2019 And I was like, OK.\u201d<\/p>\n

After flying back to L.A., she Googled \u201cWushu LA\u201d and was able to find a teacher, Master Hu, who choreographed for the Chinese Olympics. He also trained her in sword dance, which she uses in her Magdalene<\/em> live show.<\/p>\n

\u201cI named my sword Lilith [Adam\u2019s first wife], who said she didn\u2019t want to be subservient to men. So she got banished to hell,\u201d FKA Twigs said. Of the sword dance, she admitted, \u201cYou can hurt yourself. Yeah, [Lilith] sends me warnings every now and again, but only when I\u2019m not concentrating. It\u2019s the same with pole as well; I think that\u2019s why I like it. It\u2019s like that kind of present mind.\u201d<\/p>\n
