{"id":973428,"date":"2019-11-11T07:00:33","date_gmt":"2019-11-11T14:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=910195"},"modified":"2019-11-11T07:00:33","modified_gmt":"2019-11-11T14:00:33","slug":"hear-iggy-pop-frank-black-cover-jazz-great-mose-allison-for-new-tribute-album","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kfmu\/music-news\/hear-iggy-pop-frank-black-cover-jazz-great-mose-allison-for-new-tribute-album\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear Iggy Pop, Frank Black Cover Jazz Great Mose Allison for New Tribute Album"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IggyPop.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/iggy-pop\/\" id=\"auto-tag_iggy-pop\" data-tag=\"iggy-pop\">Iggy Pop<\/a> and the Pixies\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/frank-black\/\" id=\"auto-tag_frank-black\" data-tag=\"frank-black\">Frank Black<\/a> marked what would have been Mose Allison\u2019s 92nd birthday with unique takes on two tracks by jazz-blues great, \u201cIf You\u2019re going to the City\u201d and \u201cNumbers on Paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Both will appear on an upcoming Allison tribute album, <i>If You\u2019re Going to the City, <\/i>out November 29th via Fat Possum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On his rendition of the tribute album\u2019s title track, Iggy Pop puts a delightfully goofy spin on Allison\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M8eYPmKlBEE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">1968 cut<\/a>. The brassy flourishes from the original are still there \u2014 if not slightly amped up \u2014 but instead of a rollicking piano boogie, the song boasts a synth-bass groove that bends and stretches the song in fascinating ways as Iggy Pop drawls, \u201cIf you\u2019re going to the city\/There\u2019s one thing I hope\/Don\u2019t take money from a woman or mess around with dope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As for Black, he instinctually turns Allison\u2019s smokey 1998 ballad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NTt4UyulOCg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cNumbers on Paper\u201d<\/a> into a dead ringer for an early Nineties indie rock tune. The guitars are jangly and slack, although a woozy harmonica and some tasteful vibraphone plunks help the cover retain the jazzy core of the original.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/O4f7jbXz2WY?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cBoth musically and lyrically Mose is more grounded than most, and, at the same time, existentially beyond everything else out there,\u201d Black said in a statement. \u201c\u2018Numbers On Paper\u2019 is a relevant song to humanity at whatever point in the time space continuum, or \u2018spime\u2019 as Mose says, that you want to place that song. It\u2019s classic Mose, funny and heavy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Along with Iggy Pop and Black, <i>If You\u2019re Going to the City<\/i> will feature contributions from Taj Mahal, Jackson Browne, Chrissie Hynde, Bonnie Raitt, Loudon Wainwright III and Richard Thompson.
