{"id":973464,"date":"2019-11-13T04:44:38","date_gmt":"2019-11-13T11:44:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=911624"},"modified":"2019-11-13T04:44:38","modified_gmt":"2019-11-13T11:44:38","slug":"haim-flaming-lips-jack-black-team-up-for-hanukkah-album","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kfmu\/music-news\/haim-flaming-lips-jack-black-team-up-for-hanukkah-album\/","title":{"rendered":"Haim, Flaming Lips, Jack Black Team Up for Hanukkah Album"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/shutterstock_editorial_10362030x.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The festival of lights is getting a boost this year from <em>Hanukkah+<\/em>, a collection of Hanukkah classics and originals from artists like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/haim\/\" id=\"auto-tag_haim\" data-tag=\"haim\">Haim<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-flaming-lips\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-flaming-lips\" data-tag=\"the-flaming-lips\">the Flaming Lips<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/jack-black\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jack-black\" data-tag=\"jack-black\">Jack Black<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/yo-la-tengo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_yo-la-tengo\" data-tag=\"yo-la-tengo\">Yo La Tengo<\/a>. The album, produced by Grammy-winning music supervisor Randall Poster, will be released November 22nd via Verve Forecast. A vinyl release will follow on December 13th.<\/p>\n<p>Loudon Wainwright III, Moldy Peaches\u2019 Adam Green, Holy Ghost\u2019s Alex Frankel and Craig Wedren also contributed to the album. Haim take on Leonard Cohen\u2019s \u201cIf It Be Your Will,\u201d from Cohen\u2019s 1984 album <em>Various Positions<\/em>, while Watkins Family Hour sing Woody Guthrie\u2019s \u201cHanukkah Dance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The collection was inspired in part by Yo La Tengo\u2019s annual eight-night concert series \u201cHanukkah Run.\u201d \u201cWhen our old friend Randy Poster asked us to contribute to an album of Hanukkah songs he was putting together, we were kind of stumped,\u201d Yo La Tengo said in a statement. \u201cAs non-practicing Jews (and non-Jews), truthfully the holiday has little meaning for us (that\u2019s the meta joke behind Yo La Tengo\u2019s Hanukkah shows), but we were open to inspiration. We thought maybe another friend, Sam Elwitt, could crack the code, and we think he did a fantastic job with his composition \u2018Eight Candles.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p>Black, Green, the Flaming Lips and Wainwright III all wrote and recorded original songs for the album (Black contributed two tracks). Wainwright III\u2019s \u201cEight Nights a Week\u201d was inspired by Irving Berlin\u2019s \u201cWhite Christmas.\u201d \u201cWhen he asked me to write a Hanukkah song my initial thought was \u2018Why me, Lord?&#8217;\u201d Wainwright III said. \u201cBut then I remembered that I\u2019ve been referencing my non Jewish-ness in song for decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the collision of these artists and songs, I tried to create a spiritual reflection of one of the three big Jewish holidays,\u201d Poster said in a statement. \u201cHow do you make something where each song is part of a whole?
