{"id":973519,"date":"2019-11-14T10:54:47","date_gmt":"2019-11-14T17:54:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=912571"},"modified":"2019-11-14T10:54:47","modified_gmt":"2019-11-14T17:54:47","slug":"paul-mccartney-initially-thought-the-film-yesterday-was-a-terrible-idea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kfmu\/music-news\/paul-mccartney-initially-thought-the-film-yesterday-was-a-terrible-idea\/","title":{"rendered":"Paul McCartney Initially Thought the Film \u2018Yesterday\u2019 Was a \u2018Terrible Idea\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/mccartney-bb.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/rock\/8543413\/paul-mccartney-billboard-cover-story-interview-2019\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">new cover story<\/a> published by Billboard, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/paul-mccartney\/\">Paul McCartney<\/a> discussed one of his more memorable collaborations: working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/kanye-west\/\">Kanye West<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had no idea what was going to happen,\u201d McCartney said of their session. \u201cI didn\u2019t want it to be at his house or my house, because it could be awkward if one of us wanted to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They decided to meet on \u201cneutral ground\u201d (a cottage at the Beverly Hills Hotel), with a few instruments on hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was sitting around, strumming the guitar \u2014 that\u2019s normally how I start a song \u2014 and Kanye was looking at his iPad, basically scrolling through images of Kim [Kardashian],\u201d said McCartney. \u201cSo we were telling stories, and at one point I told him how \u2018Let It Be\u2019 came from a dream about my mother, who had died years before, where she said, \u2018Don\u2019t worry, just let it be.\u2019 He said, \u2018I\u2019m going to write a song about my mother,\u2019 so I sat down at this little Wurlitzer keyboard and started playing some chords, and he started singing. I thought, \u2018Oh, are we going to finish this?\u2019 but that was that. And it became \u2018Only One.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCartney also dove into details on his publishing company MPL \u2014 which owns the rights to everything from \u201cThe Christmas Song\u201d to the musical <em>Annie<\/em> \u2014 as well as what he thought of the new film <em>Yesterday<\/em>, which posits what would happen if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-beatles\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-beatles\" data-tag=\"the-beatles\">the Beatles<\/a> had never existed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard Curtis, who [directed] <em>Love Actually<\/em>, wrote to me with the idea,\u201d McCartney said. \u201cAnd I thought, \u2018This is a terrible idea,\u2019 but I couldn\u2019t tell him, so I said, \u2018Well, that sounds interesting \u2014 good luck.\u2019 I didn\u2019t think anything more of it. Then someone said Danny Boyle would direct it, and I thought, \u2018They must think they can pull it off.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCartney eventually saw the film with his wife Nancy at a movie theater in the Hamptons. \u201cOnly a couple of people saw us. We were in the back row, giggling away, especially at all the mentions of \u2018Paul McCartney.\u2019 A couple of people in front of us spotted us, but everyone else was watching the film.
