With the help of a backing band, band members Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker gave the song an upbeat but edgy vibe. \u201cEveryone I know is funny,\u201d Brownstein yelps. \u201cBut jokes don\u2019t make us money\/ Sell our rage, buy and trade\/ But we still cry for free every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Brownstein previously said the track \u201cspeaks to an existence that has been fractured and frayed by age or by loss, by divisive politics, by trauma or depression.\u201d She added, \u201cWe\u2019re always aware of the sense, as women who are not in our 30s anymore, that there\u2019s this idea that sonically you\u2019re supposed to contract after a while, and make things that are more appeasing or quieter. I think we\u2019ve always fought against that. It\u2019s also just not in our nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sleater-Kinney released<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/sleater-kinney-review-the-ceneter-wont-hold-871167\/\"> The Center Won\u2019t Hold<\/a>,<\/em> the band\u2019s first new album since 2015\u2019s <i>No Cities to Love,<\/i> in August. The songs were produced by Annie Clark of St. Vincent and marks the group\u2019s first release since the departure of long-time drummer Janet Weiss.
