{"id":973596,"date":"2019-11-19T08:31:17","date_gmt":"2019-11-19T15:31:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=914226"},"modified":"2019-11-19T08:31:17","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T15:31:17","slug":"song-you-need-to-know-destroyer-it-just-doesnt-happen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kfmu\/music-news\/song-you-need-to-know-destroyer-it-just-doesnt-happen\/","title":{"rendered":"Song You Need To Know: Destroyer, \u2018It Just Doesn\u2019t Happen\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Destroyer-TedBois1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Dan Bejar of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/destroyer\/\" id=\"auto-tag_destroyer\" data-tag=\"destroyer\">Destroyer<\/a> calls his upcoming album, <em>Have We Met<\/em>, a Y2K album. \u201cThe songs do seem to point at a very modern dread \u2014 one that heightens the more you consider it,\u201d the band said in a statement, a sentiment that could easily apply to any Destroyer record.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday, Destroyer released \u201cIt Just Doesn\u2019t Happen,\u201d the second song off of their new album, out January 31, 2020. \u201cYou\u2019re looking good\/In spite of the light,\u201d Bejar intones in the video for the new song as the headlights of a snowmobile cut through the dark, \u201cand the air\/And the time of the night.\u201d Like the vehicle, Bejar\u2019s vocals are solitary at first \u2014 with faint guitar strumming in the background.<\/p>\n<p>After quoting the Platters (\u201cSmoke gets in your eyes\u201d), Bejar heads into the chorus \u2014\u201cYou throw yourself down on the playground\/Skid to a halt on the runway\/You cast a poisonous look to the sun\/You know it doesn\u2019t just happen to anyone\u201d \u2014 before ushering in bass and drums.<\/p>\n<p><em>Have We Met<\/em> follows Destroyer\u2019s 2017 album, <em>Ken<\/em>, which was named after the original name of Suede\u2019s song \u201cThe Wild Ones.\u201d Bejar has said that he was thinking of the Margaret Thatcher era in British politics when working on that record \u2014 and it seems he\u2019s now stuck on Y2K.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find it interesting how a certain economic climate or a certain political climate makes a certain kind of art or a certain kind of song,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/read.tidal.com\/article\/dan-bejar-destroyer-cherishes-the-mystery-of-ken\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">he told TIDAL in 2017<\/a>. \u201cAny idea I had in my head was pure fiction.
