You Wouldn\u2019t Know it From the Grammy Nominations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/womeninrap.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>When it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/hip-hop\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hip-hop\" data-tag=\"hip-hop\">hip-hop<\/a>, The Recording Academy misses the mark so frequently that it\u2019s become something of an annual tradition to be baffled by its choices. While there are perennial complaints about the Grammy nomination process, it\u2019s in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/lizzo-billie-eilish-lil-nas-x-2020-grammy-nominations-914858\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rap categories<\/a> that the Grammys truly shine. At this point, expecting anything less seems foolhardy. This year\u2019s nominations continue the trend.<\/p>\n<p>For decades, thanks (in part) to constrictive public narratives and major label shenanigans, hip-hop typically only allows for one or two women to succeed in rap at a time. 2019, though, has flipped that status quo on its head. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/megan-thee-stallion\/\" id=\"auto-tag_megan-thee-stallion\" data-tag=\"megan-thee-stallion\">Megan Thee Stallion<\/a>, Lizzo, Rico Nasty, Rapsody,&nbsp; Doja Cat, and City Girls all joined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/nicki-minaj\/\" id=\"auto-tag_nicki-minaj\" data-tag=\"nicki-minaj\">Nicki Minaj<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/cardi-b\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cardi-b\" data-tag=\"cardi-b\">Cardi B<\/a> as genuine sensations in pop&nbsp; \u2014 but were also shut out from any Grammy nominations.<\/p>\n<p>There are no women as lead artists in the rap nominations, for albums or songs, in a year where there was plenty to choose from, and several inessential choices made the final list. The closest women in rap come to getting their due is Cardi B, who is competing in \u201cBest Rap Performance\u201d for a feature on Offset\u2019s \u201cClout.\u201d Projects from new and emerging artists, like YBN Cordae\u2019s <em>The Lost Boys <\/em>and&nbsp;J. Cole\u2019s Dreamville label compilation <em>Revenge of the Dreamers III<\/em>, are competing for Best Rap Album, but albums like Megan Thee Stallion\u2019s <em>Fever <\/em>(and her Nicki Minaj collaboration \u201cHot Girl Summer\u201d)&nbsp;or Rico Nasty and Kenny Beats\u2019s <em>Anger Mangement<\/em> are conspicuously absent.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not as if the Grammys completely ignored a new class of rappers, but the two breakout stars who play on hip-hop\u2019s margins were the real winners. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/lizzo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lizzo<\/a> (8) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/lil-nas-x\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lil Nas X<\/a> (6) \u2014 two artists that for all intents and purposes are rappers, but tend to shed that distinction when it suits their needs \u2014 lead the nominations this year, but both placed their bets in other genres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPanini\u201d is Lil Nas X\u2019s sole rap nomination, while \u201cOld Town Road\u201d is competing in Best Pop Duo\/Group Performance (if anything, \u201cPanini\u201d has <em>less<\/em> rapping than \u201cOld Town Road\u201d). Similarly, Lizzo has nominations spread out in Best Traditional R&amp;B Performance, Best R&amp;B Performance, Best Urban Contemporary Album, and Best Pop Solo Performance, even though she demanded to be part of the hip-hop conversation in August. \u201cSometimes I get pissed that there are people who call Future &amp; Swae Lee rappers and still question whether or not I belong in the rap conversation,\u201d she said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/hip-hop\/8527099\/lizzo-clarifies-tweet-comparing-herself-to-swae-lee-future-ater-backlash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">since-deleted tweet<\/a>. \u201cBut then I remember I have the #4 song in the country, laugh, go back to my dream job and log off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While this year\u2019s nominations seem cognizant of a need for the Grammys to diversify its awards slate, nominating the rappers listed above wouldn\u2019t have been an empty nod to inclusion, but a reflection of what\u2019s going on in rap today. 2019 was a breakthrough year for a number of new and talented stars, but expecting the Grammys to ever hit the mark is an eternal lesson in disappointment.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/women-rappers-2019-the-grammys-915066\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Rolling Stone<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to hip-hop, The Recording Academy misses the mark so frequently that it\u2019s become something of an annual tradition to be baffled by its choices.
