It was mildly confusing when Haim<\/a> released an original song titled \u201cHallelujah\u201d<\/a> on Monday, but now they\u2019ve officially dropped a Leonard Cohen<\/a> cover \u2014 a rendition \u201cIf It Be Your Will,\u201d included on the new Hanukkah+<\/em><\/a> album.<\/p>\n

The final breath to 1984\u2019s Various Positions<\/em>, \u201cIf It Be Your Will\u201d is an ethereal track that features Jennifer Warnes on backing vocals. \u201cIf it be your will\/That I speak no more\/And my voice be still\/As it was before,\u201d Cohen sings over faint acoustic guitar. \u201cI will speak no more\/I shall abide until\/I am spoken for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cohen would keep \u201cIf It Be Your Will\u201d in his setlist up until his final tour in 2013, but he\u2019d have the Webb Sisters<\/a> perform the track. Like many of the late singer\u2019s songs, \u201cIf It Be Your Will\u201d has been covered numerous times, most notably Anohni\u2019s heart-wrenching rendition<\/a> that was included in the 2005 film Leonard Cohen: I\u2019m Your Man. <\/em><\/p>\n

That being said, did Haim really need to cover this song? What could a sister trio of California millennials possibly offer to the track that hasn\u2019t already been done before? Turns out, a lot: the Haim version, produced by Ariel Rechtshaid, is a devastatingly gorgeous update on the classic. With shimmering synths and nylon guitar, Danielle Haim\u2019s vocals echo like the walls inside a sanctuary \u2014 serene, yet so incredibly somber you seek refuge. \u201cFrom this broken hill\/All your praises they shall ring,\u201d she stirs. \u201cIf it be your will\/To let me sing.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s fitting that Haim\u2019s cover was released the same day as Cohen\u2019s posthumous LP Thanks for the Dance.<\/em> Three years after his death, his legacy lives on.<\/p>\n
