Flowers appeared amazed by the precocious teen, who confidently took over Ronnie Vannucci Jr.\u2019s spot behind the kit, leading to the crowd erupting in cheers and chanting Verebay\u2019s name after the song was done.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"5.9381443298969\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">WATCH: 17-year-old Jayson Verebay gets invited onstage by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thekillers?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">@thekillers<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RiptideFest?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">#RiptideFest<\/a> and absolutely SLAYS IT on the drums. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/slpb0CkBpd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/slpb0CkBpd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tim Chan (@mrtimchan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mrtimchan\/status\/1198485077061033985?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">November 24, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAs I was coming up there, my heart was pounding and I was actually shaking,\u201d Verebay told Rolling Stone immediately after The Killers\u2019 set, which closed night one of this year\u2019s Riptide Fest. \u201cIt was the most mind-boggling experience ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Verebay, who says he picked up his first set of drumsticks when he was five and counts Vannucci Jr. as one of his heroes, admits he had been preparing for a moment like this for weeks (while some questioned whether the teen was planted in the audience, his high school teacher confirms the interaction was unplanned). \u201cI know that the band\u2019s played this song before and I\u2019ve just been practicing to live versions of it for the past month,\u201d Verebay says, \u201cbut I didn\u2019t think it would actually happen for me. I thought I would forget everything, but I got it down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even more special: it was his first time seeing the band perform live. \u201cThis is something I\u2019ve been dreaming about for a long time,\u201d Verebay says. \u201cIt was the most incredible experience and I\u2019m still speechless.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-contextual-player\">\n<h3> Popular on Rolling Stone <\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> <!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p>The Killers\u2019 performance at Riptide comes just days after the band announced the release of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-killers-new-album-imploding-the-mirage-913133\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sixth studio album,<\/a> due out this spring. Titled \u201cImploding the Mirage,\u201d the new album will be supported by a string of stadium dates in Ireland and the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The band ran through a string of hits during their performance Saturday, opening with a snippet of Frank Sinatra\u2019s \u201cLuck be a Lady\u201d (an homage to their Vegas roots) and closing with \u201cMr. Brightside.\u201d Flowers also paid tribute to Tom Petty during their set, rehashing a cover of \u201cAmerican Girl\u201d and \u201cFree Fallin\u201d that the band first performed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-killers-perform-rousing-tom-petty-cover-at-rock-hall-of-fame-628917\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Petty\u2019s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony<\/a> last April.<\/p>\n<p>This was The Killers\u2019 first time playing Riptide Fest, a two-day musical festival set on the beach in Fort Lauderdale and part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunny.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau\u2019s<\/a> efforts to bring more diverse acts in arts and culture to the city.
