The instrumental song, which strips down the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/hunky-dory-100864\/\"><em>Hunky Dory<\/em><\/a> piece to a plinky keyboard line and airy synths, appears in the superhero drama\u2019s recently aired seventh episode, \u201cAn Almost Religious Awe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reznor and Ross are releasing their <em>Watchmen<\/em> score as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/trent-reznor-atticus-watchmen-soundtrack-901981\/\">three-volume soundtrack<\/a>, with each edition issued on vinyl throughout the show\u2019s first season. The first two volumes came out in November, and the third installment follows on December 16th.<\/p>\n<p>Nine Inch Nails have paid tribute to Bowie in the past, having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/watch-nine-inch-nails-mournful-david-bowie-cover-195277\/\">covered<\/a> the late musician\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/blackstar-202150\/\"><em>Blackstar<\/em><\/a> track \u201cI Can\u2019t Give Everything Away\u201d onstage in 2017. Reznor, who referred to Bowie as a \u201cmentor\u201d and \u201cfatherly figure\u201d in a written <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/trent-reznor-recalls-how-david-bowie-helped-him-get-sober-229659\/\">memorial<\/a>, contributed to the singer\u2019s 1997 single \u201cI\u2019m Afraid of Americans\u201d and even appeared in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=u7APmRkatEU\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">music video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Reznor recently spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/trent-reznor-watchmen-pretty-hate-machine-interview-905456\/\"><em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> about his admiration for <em>Watchmen<\/em> showrunner Damon Lindelof and the strategy behind releasing the soundtrack in three pieces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re having some fun with the way that it\u2019s released,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are a number of reasons behind doing that. One is there is quite a bit of music, and I think when you drop a big chunk \u2014 a couple hours\u2019 worth of music \u2014 on the public these days, that\u2019s a good way to get 90 percent of it ignored. So breaking it up is good.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-contextual-player\">\n<h3> Popular on Rolling Stone <\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe motivation wasn\u2019t to monetize it three times,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat wasn\u2019t what the deciding factor was. And we\u2019re putting it out on vinyl because we\u2019ve been on a physical-object kick. Speaking for myself, that\u2019s for nostalgic reasons. I\u2019m looking at a shelf full of vinyl albums right now, and it that feels a little different than something that\u2019s a cloud-based file, which feels a little disposable. They also tie into&nbsp;<i>Watchmen<\/i>.
