Take the dreamy \u201cRio,\u201d a 1977 track that was accompanied by one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WnpcTsy10dE\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">first-ever music videos.<\/a> Or 1970\u2019s \u201cJoanne,\u201d Nesmith\u2019s first and only hit with his First National Band. The song remains a cult favorite \u2014 even Brian Williams requested it during a performance at the Beacon Theater earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Nesmith released <em>Cosmic Partners: The McCabe\u2019s Tapes<\/em>, a live album from 1973 recorded inside a guitar shop in Santa Monica. Backed by Red Rhodes\u2019 sparse pedal steel, the intimate performance captures Nesmith at his most vulnerable.&nbsp;\u201cI was lost musically, lost financially, lost professionally,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/michael-nesmith-interview-monkees-tour-peter-tork-917100\/\"><em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> on Tuesday. \u201cI really didn\u2019t know what to do. And my only friends were the musicians I was playing with. I was playing old-time folk songs, basically the songs I came out to L.A. with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow and Me\u201d echoes this melancholy. The acoustic ditty clocks in over 5 minutes, with Nesmith coming to terms with his despair: \u201cI\u2019ve forgotten how long I\u2019ve been sitting here\/Watching my reflection in a disappearing beer,\u201d he laments over Rhodes\u2019 melting pedal steel. \u201cThe loneliness is so thick you can slice it\/The emptiness is too much for me to fight it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The song originally appeared as the opening track to 1972\u2019s <em>And the Hits Just Keep on Comin,\u2019<\/em> the same album that contained \u201cDifferent Drum,\u201d which Linda Ronstadt turned into a hit in 1967 with the Stone Poneys. \u201cI think he liked it,\u201d Ronstadt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/linda-ronstadt-doc-interview-879351\/\">recently told us<\/a> about the song. \u201cIt made him lots of money.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-contextual-player\">\n<h3> Popular on Rolling Stone <\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nesmith will tour with Micky Dolenz as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-monkees\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-monkees\" data-tag=\"the-monkees\">the Monkees<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-monkees-2020-tour-911179\/\">in 2020<\/a>, and he\u2019s in no hurry to book shows with his First National Band. \u201cIf I was in the shape I was in back in McCabe\u2019s, I\u2019ll book it myself,\u201d he says. \u201cGive me a call! Send me a check! But I\u2019m very, very dialed-down now. I\u2019m no longer having any notions of superstardom. The notions I have are of eternal peace and happiness, so I\u2019m going to keep working through that.
