In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfi.org.uk\/news-opinion\/sight-sound-magazine\/interviews\/martin-scorsese-irishman-sight-sound-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">new interview with the British Film Institute,<\/a> director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/martin-scorsese\/\" id=\"auto-tag_martin-scorsese\" data-tag=\"martin-scorsese\">Martin Scorsese<\/a>, who had not previously commented on the matter, reveals that wasn\u2019t the original plan for the film.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we had <em>Rolling Thunder<\/em> constructed, [editor] David Tedeschi and I looked at it, and I said, \u2018It\u2019s conventional,&#8217;\u201d said Scorsese. \u201c\u2018It\u2019s just a film about a group of people who go on the road and they sing some songs. I\u2019m going to have to start all over.\u2019 We have to go with the music, maybe, go with the spirit of the <em>commedia dell\u2019arte.<\/em> And then the words started to come in about possibly people who weren\u2019t there, being there. [<em>Laughs<\/em>] That\u2019s interesting. That\u2019s a challenge, as they say. Let\u2019s pursue <em>that.<\/em>\u201d (It\u2019s unclear where exactly the idea originated.)<\/p>\n<p>He wound up bringing in Sharon Stone to pretend she was a college-age girlfriend of Dylan on the tour, complete with doctored photos of them together. Also along for the ride was Martin von Haselberg in the role of supposed documentarian Steven van Dorp, Michael Murphy as fictional Michigan congressman Jack Tanner and Paramount Pictures CEO Jim Gianopulos as a concert promoter.<\/p>\n<p><!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s say Sharon Stone represents certain things,\u201d Scorsese said. \u201cWhat about the businessman, the marketing man? And that\u2019s [the head of Paramount] Jim Gianopulos\u2026So why don\u2019t we <em>not<\/em>&nbsp;stop there? What about the filmmaker? Great. And he had to be taken advantage of. [<em>Laughs<\/em>] He possesses the performers, he wants to&nbsp;<em>be<\/em>&nbsp;them. It\u2019s like us, making this\u2026 we love the music and the performers so much that the only thing we can do is photograph them and edit it, right? And we wanna be&nbsp;<em>them<\/em>. And no matter what, we\u2019re left wanting more.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-contextual-player\">\n<h3> Popular on Rolling Stone <\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Scorsese went on to say that the unconventional approach to the film influenced his work on <em>The Irishman<\/em>. \u201cOn certain films I\u2019m locked into a narrative \u2014 I used to say plot, but it\u2019s more than plot, it\u2019s narrative,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I\u2019ve been trying to break free of it, and tell stories in a different way, and I found that the documentaries helped me with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story<\/em> was a follow-up to Martin Scorsese\u2019s 2005 documentary <em>No Direction Home,<\/em> which told the story of Dylan\u2019s from childhood through his 1966 motorcycle accident. Despite the countless hours sorting through Dylan\u2019s visual archives and turning them into films, Scorsese says he hasn\u2019t had direct communication with the songwriter in a very long time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast time I saw Dylan was at a big dinner for Armani, 20 years ago,\u201d he said. \u201cI met him a few times with Robbie Robertson.
