Clutching two shopping bags filled with streetwear-inspired T-shirts and red-and-black accessories (matching the aesthetic of the <em>Romance<\/em> album art), the 17-year-old proudly pulled out an autographed CD he had purchased, even though, he confessed, he doesn\u2019t own a CD player.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t really have a way to listen to this,\u201d he admits, \u201cbut I\u2019m just buying the album so it\u2019ll go to Number One on the charts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garcia was among hundreds of so-called \u201cCamilizers\u201d who lined up along Los Angeles\u2019 bustling Fairfax Avenue Friday (some as early as 2:30 a.m.) to tour and shop the vaguely Versailles-themed space, which promised a \u201cmulti-sensory\u201d exploration of Cabello\u2019s new album (the album played on loop through speakers). In addition to the custom-designed merch, the converted gallery had plenty of photos of the singer, alongside floral-adorned walls and posters displaying lyrics from <em>Romance,<\/em> with short blurbs about how each song came to be.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p>The two-day \u201cfan experience\u201d (sponsored by Verizon) also included a live Q&amp;A session with the singer before 50 or so fans in the pop-up space and thousands more tuning in online. For Garcia, who says he\u2019s been a fan of Cabello\u2019s ever since he heard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/fifth-harmony\/\">Fifth Harmony<\/a>\u2018s \u201cWorth It\u201d on the radio, the event was a chance to feel closer to his favorite artist and also connect with fellow fans.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-contextual-player\">\n<h3> Popular on Rolling Stone <\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re definitely committed and dedicated to her,\u201d he says, explaining why he, like others in the room, had traveled all the way to L.A. just to watch a 30-minute interview and to shop T-shirts and hoodies that were <a href=\"https:\/\/camilacabello.shop.musictoday.com\/store\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">also available online<\/a>. \u201cShe\u2019s really relatable, and she knows how to treat her fans and connect with her audience.\u201d That bond, Garcia explained, is why the Camilizers stick together to celebrate, promote, and <em>defend<\/em> their queen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gets a lot of hate, but because we love her so much and she\u2019s such a genuine soul, we look out for her,\u201d he explains, adding, \u201cWe can be very defensive at times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Who exactly is hating on Cabello? \u201cStan twitter,\u201d Garcia quips.<\/p>\n<p>Nearby, 21-year-old Camilizer Cesar Perez was trying to be more diplomatic. <span>\u201cWe are all supportive and positive,\u201d says Perez, who had taken the bus in from Bakersfield with his friend that afternoon to attend the Q&amp;A. \u201c<\/span><span>We\u2019re not too die-hard where we\u2019ll start attacking or bashing other people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Perez says he\u2019s aware of what can happen when fandoms get out of control, citing Taylor Swift\u2019s fans, who came under fire recently after Scooter Braun revealed that his family was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/scooter-braun-taylor-swift-instagram-916384\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">getting death threats on social media<\/a> after Swift called him out for blocking the performance of her old songs (something Braun has denied).&nbsp;<span>Are Camilizers that hardcore? \u201cUm\u2026\u201d Perez stammers, \u201cin a way, kind of?\u201d he says. \u201cBut we\u2019re just protecting Taylor because she\u2019s really close to Camila.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t hard to see why Cabello\u2019s fans feel so tied to her. During the Q&amp;A, she frequently asked the audience for their opinion on everything from their favorite song on the album (the F-bomb dropping \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2PlzHnx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">This Love<\/a>\u201d seemed to be a consensus) to what they think the next single should be (half the room shouts out \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2sMesDN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">My Oh My,<\/a>\u201d which features <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/dababy-baby-of-the-year-901697\/\">DaBaby<\/a>). When Cabello\u2019s dog Eugene (named after the prince in <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2DWFwmm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>Tangled<\/em><\/a>) escapes from her mom\u2019s lap and begins sprinting around the room, fans call out to him as if he were their own pet. <em>It\u2019s OK, Eugene, come here<\/em>. And then there\u2019s Shawn, as in Mendes, Cabello\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/shawn-mendes-camila-cabello-senorita-video-watch-850346\/\">\u201cSe\u00f1orita\u201d duet partner<\/a> and real-life boyfriend. Every mention of his name elicits audible gasps and giggles among the predominantly teenage crowd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span>He\u2019s iconic,\u201d Garcia says. \u201cThey\u2019re a power couple.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Or as Esmeralda Vega, who\u2019s been following Cabello\u2019s career since she debuted on<em> The X-Factor, <\/em>adds: \u201cIt\u2019s about time [they got together],\u201d she gushes. \u201cI saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/mtv-vmas-2019-12-best-worst-wtf-moments-876950\/shawn-mendes-camila-cabello-876963\/\">the chemistry<\/a> for a long time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Vega, who traveled almost two hours to attend the Q&amp;A, says she was heartened to see that Cabello was just as sweet as she\u2019d hoped. \u201cShe has always stood out to me, even when she was in Fifth Harmony,\u201d Vega says, adding that Camilizers still support Cabello\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/fifth-harmony\/\">former bandmates<\/a>, even if they\u2019re not as devoted. \u201c<span>We get along with everyone,\u201d she insists, \u201cand we are different from other fandoms because of the way Camila is. She\u2019s very kind and loving and friendly, so she attracts those type of people in return.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>During Friday\u2019s question-and-answer, Cabello took questions from fans in the audience and members of Verizon\u2019s rewards program, Verizon Up. (Photo by Charley Gallay\/Getty Images for Verizon)\" width=\"1024\" height=\"730\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/shawn-mendes\/\" id=\"auto-tag_shawn-mendes\" data-tag=\"shawn-mendes\">Shawn Mendes<\/a> was one of the first people to hear the album.<\/strong><br \/>Cabello said she played the finished album for her mom, and her manager Roger Gold first, before sharing it with Mendes. His favorite song on <em>Romance<\/em>: the brassy, told-you-so anthem, \u201cShould\u2019ve Said It.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift both name \u201cFirst Man\u201d as their favorite track from <em>Romance<\/em><\/strong><br \/>While visiting Sheeran in Nashville, Cabello played a rough cut of her song \u201cFirst Man\u201d for him. The gentle ballad, inspired by the singer\u2019s relationship with her father, immediately struck a chord with Sheeran, and Cabello says he called it his \u201cfavorite song\u201d that she\u2019s ever done, urging her to finish recording it.<\/p>\n<p>The following night, Cabello went over to Swift\u2019s place in Nashville and played the song for her, too. The singer says Swift had the same reaction. \u201cFirst Man\u201d became the first song Cabello wrote for <em>Romance<\/em>, and one that she says was the most \u201cemotional\u201d and \u201cvulnerable\u201d for her to record.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Cabello loves all 14 tracks on her album but\u2026<\/strong><br \/>Cabello says she hasn\u2019t been able to listen to \u201cBad Kind of Butterflies\u201d ever since she first recorded it. \u201cIt takes me back to a time when I was always feeling anxious,\u201d she said, about the sparse, bass-heavy track, who finds the singer desperate to get something off her chest but unsure of how to break the news to her presumed lover. \u201cJust thinking about writing [the song] makes me want to throw up,\u201d she said, half-jokingly. \u201cI don\u2019t even like hearing that song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. She likes surprising Mendes with impromptu visits<\/strong><br \/>\u201cI love surprise flights,\u201d Cabello confessed, when asked about the most romantic thing she\u2019s done for a partner. \u201cI\u2019ll fly somewhere to see someone, even for just a day,\u201d she confessed.<\/p>\n<p>Cabello played coy when asked where she\u2019s flown to recently, though fans at the pop-up yelled out \u201cSan Francisco!\u201d alluding to photos of the singer sharing a kiss with Mendes in the Golden Gate City over the summer. The city \u2014 and possible rendezvous \u2014 is also referenced in the song, \u201cUsed to This,\u201d with Cabello purring: \u201cNo, I never liked San Francisco \/ Never thought it was nothin\u2019 special \/ \u2018Til you kissed me there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Writing about romance came naturally to her<\/strong><br \/>\u201cI\u2019m not going to write songs about making money and being a bad bitch,\u201d Cabello said, when asked what inspires her music. \u201cThat\u2019s just not what\u2019s important to me and that\u2019s not who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Romance<\/em> pop-up shop in L.A. comes on the heels of a similar event with Amazon in New York City. Cabello\u2019s label, Epic Records, is also launching album art-inspired exhibits in New York, L.A., and other cities around the world.
