Billy Joel<\/a> was eight songs into his show at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night when his daughter Alexa came out to lead the band in a rendition of \u201cWhite Christmas.\u201d The Irving Berlin classic is one of the most covered songs of all time, but Joel hasn\u2019t performed it since December 13th, 1998, also at Madison Square Garden.<\/p>\n

Joel has been joined by many guests since beginning his monthly Madison Square Garden residency in 2014 \u2014 including Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Miley Cyrus and Peter Frampton \u2014 but Alexa is his most regular one with five appearances. At previous shows, she\u2019s joined him for \u201cBaby Grand, \u201c\u2018New York State of Mind\u201d and \u201cHave Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.\u201d (He also brought out his infant daughter Della Rose<\/a> for \u201cDon\u2019t Ask Me Why\u201d last year, but she got a little shy and merely tapped her feet along to the beat.)<\/p>\n

Prior to Alexa\u2019s appearance on Wednesday night, Joel played \u201cHave Yourself a Merry Little Christmas\u201d along with the 1982 Nylon Curtain<\/em> deep cut \u201cShe\u2019s Right on Time.\u201d The rest of the show was devoted to live favorites like \u201cAllentown,\u201d \u201cAll About Soul,\u201d \u201cPiano Man,\u201d \u201cOnly the Good Die Young\u201d and the grand finale of \u201cYou May Be Right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite not releasing an album of new pop songs since 1993\u2019s River of Dreams<\/em>, Joel remains an enormous draw on the concert circuit. Beyond his monthly stint at MSG, he also spends the summer headlining baseball stadiums around the country.<\/p>\n

Why now?\u2019 I guess, in a way, I\u2019m an anachronism. There aren\u2019t that many of me left. There\u2019s a rarity to it, which gives it value.\u201d<\/p>\n
