So, How Was Your Decade<\/a> is a series in which many of the 2010s\u2019 most important musicians answer our questionnaire about the people, places and things that shaped their decade. We\u2019ll be rolling these pieces out throughout December.<\/em><\/p>\n

Laura Jane Grace<\/a> is parked outside her daughter\u2019s school after a parent-teacher meeting when Rolling Stone<\/em> calls to talk about her decade. She\u2019s just announced a 2020 tour<\/a> and teased a new Against Me<\/a>! album and she\u2019s hopped up on enthusiasm, coffee and hope for the future of her band \u2014 although she admits that releasing a new album during an election year is going to be a challenge.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a bittersweet decade for Grace. The longstanding frontwoman of Naples, Florida, punk band Against Me!, Grace came out as transgender in 2012<\/a> and began an artistic renaissance in subsequent years. In 2014, Against Me! released the stellar Transgender Dysphoria Blues<\/a><\/em>, and Grace served as the Music Director of MTV\u2019s Rebel Music <\/em>series focusing on global social change alongside releasing a 10-episode, Emmy-nominated docuseries on AOL called True Trans With Laura Jane Grace<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Over the next five years, Grace dropped an autobiography, 2016\u2019s Tranny: Confessions of Punk Rock\u2019s Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout<\/em>, another incredible Against Me! album (2016\u2019s Shape Shift With Me<\/em>), a new project (The Devouring Mothers), and had her share of adventures with the likes of Miley Cyrus and Rivers Cuomo. All this while fighting to become a healthier version of herself \u2014 and to get through six seasons of teen drama The 100<\/em> with her 10-year-old daughter.<\/p>\n

Heading into a new decade in the midst of impeachment hearings and a looming presidential election, Grace reflects on the last 10 years.<\/p>\n

My favorite album of the 2010s was: <\/strong>I have to go with Blackstar<\/em>, David Bowie\u2019s final album. Maybe saying \u201cfavorite\u201d is wrong, but I feel like it\u2019s the most important album of the decade \u2014 right in the middle of the decade, too, so a good amount of perspective. It\u2019s so unique being able to see the arc of a career in that way and where a career ends and the sheer brilliance of the album \u2014 knowing that you\u2019re dying and working on an album and wrapping things up is incredible.<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s the Rapture\u2019s In the Grace of Your Love, <\/em>[an] album I was listening to at the beginning of the decade that I still regularly listen to.<\/p>\n

My favorite song of the 2010s was: <\/strong>Prince\u2019s \u201cScrewdriver.\u201d It\u2019s a perfect rock & roll gem that, had it been released in the Eighties, would have most assuredly been a huge hit. So impressive to me as a song on one of his final releases. As if he hadn\u2019t already exuded enough greatness, he just shakes that song out of a sleeve and makes it all seem effortless.<\/p>\n
