In the midst of impeachment buildup and \u201cHot Girl Summer<\/a>\u201d and Greta Thunberg\u2019s voyage to the U.S.<\/a> and Lizzo-mania, perhaps you missed 2019\u2019s true song of the summer. You know, the one about the Ice Cream of the Future. \u201cGot myself one cup \/ Now I\u2019m feeling like I\u2019m on top,\u201d sang the recently-disbanded major label tween girl group L2M (Jenna Raine, Kenzie Mack, Tati McQuay, and Mariangeli Collado) on the dance-pop song \u201cI Want My Dippin\u2019 Dots.\u201d The video<\/a> was released this past May, in which a bunch of happy young people enjoy their frozen dessert while singing: \u201cI be all about that \/ I be all about Dippin\u2019 Dots.\u201d<\/p>\n

The song \u2014 which was paid for by the flash-frozen ice cream company \u2014 would not go on to top the charts, but it transcended advertising jingle, taking on more of a life than any recording with an artist listed simply as \u201cDippin\u2019 Dots\u201d on Spotify had any right to. Local news anchors tweeted<\/a> about the song; it would get played<\/a> in professional sports stadiums, garner well over 100,000 plays on YouTube, and, as the corporation had very much intended, even foster a minor viral dance challenge.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had something like 78,000 streams so far,\u201d a representative from Dippin\u2019 Dots told Rolling Stone<\/em> this past summer. \u201cThat\u2019s pretty good, considering we\u2019re not a band.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI Want My Dippin\u2019 Dots,\u201d it turns out, is not even the only song of its sort. Like most everything that happened in 2019, the ice cream company\u2019s foray into pre-teen pop began in 2016. That year, the New York singer Dawin joined up with Silent\u00f3 for a nihilistic viral hit titled \u201cDessert<\/a>.\u201d When Dippin\u2019 Dots first heard the song, they saw an opportunity.<\/p>\n

\u201cPart of the lyrics was that you can imitate it, but you can\u2019t duplicate it,\u201d says the Dippin\u2019 Dots rep. \u201cWe thought that was what Dippin\u2019 Dots was about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dippin\u2019 Dots soon reached out to Dawin about a possible collaboration. \u201cWe liked his \u2018Dessert\u2019 song,\u201d says the rep, \u201cbut it was like, \u2018can you craft it where you speak about Dippin\u2019 Dots in it?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Dawin happily obliged, releasing a \u201cDippin\u2019 Dots remix\u201d of \u201cDessert\u201d to celebrate National Ice Cream Day in the summer of 2016. For licensing reasons, the song is no longer publicly available, but a short clip of it still exists<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to challenge myself creatively and present a fun rendition of \u2018Dessert,\u2019\u201d Dawin said at the time. \u201cEspecially since I\u2019ve been familiar with Dippin\u2019 Dots for many years.\u201d Dawin teamed up with the futuristic Kentucky-based ice cream company once again for \u201cI Want My Dippin\u2019 Dots,\u201d writing the original song for the now-individual members of L2M to craft the company\u2019s youth-oriented theme song. Eventually the company also enlisted JoJo Siwa\u2019s choreographer Guy Groove to come up with an original dance<\/a> to the song.<\/p>\n

I have no idea how I first encountered \u201cI Want My Dippin\u2019 Dots,\u201d but I do know that once I heard it, I couldn\u2019t look away. I\u2019m not sure if the song made me crave Dippin\u2019 Dots in the summertime more than usual (I didn\u2019t need a catchy pop song for that), but it certainly made me think about them much more. As the song puts it during its half-rapped verse, \u201cThis is a Dippin\u2019 Dots situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

I started singing the song to myself. I played it for friends and family members. I wasn\u2019t alone; some of them told me they had the same reaction. \u201cOmg I just listened to this song once and it immediately got stuck in my head!\u201d one commenter wrote on YouTube.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish dippin dots had carts in my neighborhood,\u201d wrote another.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s exactly what the company had intended. \u201cOne of the main things we want to do is have Dippin\u2019 Dots be a part of kids\u2019 lives,\u201d the company says. \u201cWherever they are having fun, whether it\u2019s in an amusement park where they\u2019re going to ride a ride and then they\u2019re going to get Dippin\u2019 Dots, or whether it\u2019s a video game, or, in this case, music, we want to be engrained in their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
