With Jarvis Cocker<\/a>\u2019s \u201cRunning the World\u201d in the midst of a grassroots campaign to capture the vaunted Christmas Number One single spot in the Brexit-bound U.K., the Pulp singer has shared a new version of the 2006 song.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even before Boris Johnson was reaffirmed as the British prime minister, Cocker\u2019s Jarvis<\/em> hidden track \u2014 with its now-rallying cry chorus, \u201cCunts are still running the world\u201d \u2014 was gaining support to be this year\u2019s renegade Christmas Number One single; in 2009, a grassroots campaign successfully rocketed Rage Against the Machine\u2019s 1992 single \u201cKilling in the Name\u201d to the Xmas top spot<\/a> usually reserved for of-the-moment pop songs. <\/span><\/p>\n

Cocker said in a statement: \u201cSo here\u2019s the story: about a month ago the Kaiser Quartett sent me a recording of their arrangement of \u2018Running the World\u2019 and asked if I\u2019d consider singing on it. So I did. The song will feature on one of their upcoming record releases but \u2014 given the current campaign \u2014 we thought you might like to get a sneak preview right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The new rendition follows the efforts of a 24,000-member Facebook group<\/a> that ignited the \u201cRunning the World\u201d campaign. \u201cI just want to say a very big thank you to everyone involved in this campaign to get \u2018Cunts Are Still Running the World\u2019 to #1 for Xmas,\u201d Cocker wrote on Instagram Wednesday. \u201cWhat a lark! I\u2019m so proud that people have chosen the song as a means of protest against the social, political and environmental situation we find ourselves in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

However, \u201cRunning the World\u201d faces an uphill battle less than a week from Christmas: According to Official Charts<\/a>, as of Wednesday, \u201cRunning the World\u201d sat at Number 87, roughly 5,000 units out of the Top 40. Regardless of where it finishes, Cocker has pledged that proceeds from the renewed interest in \u201cRunning the World\u201d will benefit the homelessness organization Shelter<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
