The Michael Jackson<\/a> estate has settled its copyright lawsuit<\/a> with Disney<\/a> over the TV special The Last Days of Michael Jackson<\/em><\/a>, which aired on ABC in 2018 and, according to the estate, used Jackson\u2019s image and music without permission.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe matter was amicably resolved,\u201d a rep from the Jackson estate told Rolling Stone<\/em> Thursday. <\/span>Reps for ABC and Disney did not immediately reply to requests for comment. <\/span>Details of the settlement were not revealed.<\/span><\/p>\n

In May 2018, the Jackson estate, which had previously voiced its disapproval<\/a> of the unauthorized The Last Days of Michael Jackson<\/em>, filed the lawsuit<\/a> against Disney, ABC\u2019s parent company, over the special, arguing that it used \u201csubstantial portions\u201d of estate-owned copyrighted material \u2014 music videos, concert performances, documentary footage and more \u2014 without permission. <\/span><\/p>\n

The estate claimed to only find out about The Last Days of Michael Jackson<\/em> days before its premiere and protested the use of a Jackson image in promotional materials; ABC immediately removed the promotional images, but argued their utilizing Jackson\u2019s music and videos in the special fell under the \u201cfair use\u201d doctrine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDisney and ABC committed willful and intentional copyright infringement when they used the Estate\u2019s copyrighted materials without the Estate\u2019s permission,\u201d Jackson estate attorney Howard Weitzman said in a statement at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

A jury trial was scheduled to begin in December 2019 before the settlement was reached.<\/span><\/p>\n
