From the dawn of his post-One Direction career, Harry Styles<\/a> has exhibited quality taste in opening acts: His 2017 Live on Tour shows brought along Kacey Musgraves<\/a>, Leon Bridges and Warpaint in various parts of the world.<\/p>\n

That tradition extended to the recent announcement of his Love on Tour shows: Opening on all of Styles\u2019 American tour dates next year will be Jenny Lewis<\/a>, fresh off of the acclaim for this year\u2019s On the Line<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so excited about it,\u201d Lewis says from her current home base in Nashville. \u201cI feel there\u2019s so much wonderful good will toward Harry, and I\u2019m super thrilled he asked me to join him. 2020, man.\u201d<\/p>\n

One would assume the two had spoken about it or were friends, but exactly how Lewis came to land this prime gig remains something of a mystery \u2014 even to Lewis herself. \u201cWe don\u2019t know each other \u2014 I\u2019ve never met him,\u201d Lewis says. \u201cI think he really likes On the Line<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Does she know for a fact that he\u2019s heard her album? \u201cNo, but I guess I\u2019ll find out,\u201d she says. \u201cI have no idea!\u201d (Styles was not available for comment at press time.)<\/p>\n

Starting with her days in Rilo Kiley, Lewis has long been a compelling presence in the world of alternative Americana. It\u2019s easy to imagine why Styles, who has one foot in modern times and another in roughly 1975, would take to On the Line<\/em>. Lewis\u2019 first album in five years was a bracing reminder of her skills: songs about romantic turmoil, sung in a voice that can sound both teary and determined, all set to tracks that recall pre-dance pop yet never sound retro.<\/p>\n

Then again, maybe it has something to do with their similar album titles \u2014 his Fine Line <\/em>and her On the Line<\/em>. \u201cOr similar color palettes,\u201d Lewis says. \u201cI think we\u2019re both leaning into blue and pink.\u201d<\/p>\n

For someone who\u2019s been relatively quiet the last few years (she briefly fronted a New York-based band, Nice as Fuck), Lewis will be having a high-profile 2020. In January, she\u2019ll be heard on Let the Rhythm Lead: Haitian Song Summit Vol. 1<\/em>, a collaborative album recorded in that country in 2016 and featuring contributions from Lewis, Jackson Browne, and the Head and the Heart\u2019s Jonathan Russell along with local and international musicians. Lewis sings lead on one track, \u201cUnder the Supermoon,\u201d about her trip to the often troubled Haiti, and contributed backing vocals and keyboards to other tracks.<\/p>\n

But clearly Lewis\u2019 stint with Styles \u2014 starting in June and wrapping up in September \u2014 will be taking precedence. \u201cIt\u2019s an amazing opportunity,\u201d she says. \u201cI keep thinking of the thousands of little girls and young men and parents of those kids, and just being in a room with people hearing my songs I\u2019ve been writing for so long. What an incredible opportunity. It\u2019s cool opening for Pavement, which I\u2019ve done, but that\u2019s a whole other scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lewis says she hasn\u2019t yet started prepping for it. \u201cOh, is it in six months?\u201d she says. \u201cI only work one or two days in advance.\u201d<\/p>\n
