Despite the fact that they\u2019re not the biggest fans of each other, they\u2019re inextricably linked.<\/p>\n<p>As such, \u201cBall and Chain,\u201d as a song, epitomizes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-who\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-who\" data-tag=\"the-who\">The Who<\/a>. A growling stadium-filler written by Townshend and sung by Daltrey, it\u2019s bombastic (in the best possible way) and political \u2014 although a bit Johnny-Come-Lately in that regard (\u201cDown in Guantanamo,\/ Whew, still waiting for the big cigars\u201d). When was the last time anyone talked about Guantanamo in 2019? Regardless, it\u2019s a barn-shaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019ve made our best album since&nbsp;<em>Quadrophenia<\/em> in 1973,\u201d Daltrey said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-who-album-ball-and-chain-883875\/\">statement<\/a> on <em>Who<\/em>, the 2019 album on which \u201cBall and Chain\u201d appears. \u201cPete hasn\u2019t lost it. He\u2019s still a fabulous songwriter, and he\u2019s still got that cutting edge.\u201d Daltrey, for his part, hasn\u2019t lost his fire. Although his voice doesn\u2019t sound like it did 40 years ago \u2014 why would it? \u2014 it certainly carries its weight.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s what\u2019s so endearing about \u201cBall and Chain.\u201d They\u2019re not quite the same men that sang \u201cMy Generation\u201d \u2014 we\u2019ve seen a generation or two pass since then \u2014 and thank God. They\u2019re cantankerous and their voices and sensibilities have been shaped by the passage of time. They don\u2019t sound dated, but they still sound unmistakably like The Who.<\/p>\n<p><em>Who<\/em> is the band\u2019s first album in 13 years \u2014 and it was made without Daltrey or Townshend entering the same room. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/who-new-album-new-tour-townshend-daltrey-913902\/\">recent piece for <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>, the two were interviewed separately and even stayed in different hotels. They took turns aiming playful jabs at each other as well.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-contextual-player\">\n<h3> Popular on Rolling Stone <\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf you watch Roger onstage, he goes through a lot of visual phases,\u201d Townshend said. \u201cSometimes, he can\u2019t stop himself looking over at me. It\u2019s irritation. It\u2019s irritation that I\u2019m even there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPete doesn\u2019t remember words much,\u201d Daltrey said, \u201cand he doesn\u2019t remember chord shapes, and he finds it hard to change the show on the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite their differences, the Who continue to tour together and will do so in 2020.
