{"id":974256,"date":"2020-01-04T09:55:24","date_gmt":"2020-01-04T16:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=933639"},"modified":"2020-01-04T09:55:24","modified_gmt":"2020-01-04T16:55:24","slug":"miley-cyrus-reaches-settlement-in-300-million-we-cant-stop-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kfmu\/music-news\/miley-cyrus-reaches-settlement-in-300-million-we-cant-stop-lawsuit\/","title":{"rendered":"Miley Cyrus Reaches Settlement in $300 Million \u2018We Can\u2019t Stop\u2019 Lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/10323507bj.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/miley-cyrus\/\" id=\"auto-tag_miley-cyrus\" data-tag=\"miley-cyrus\">Miley Cyrus<\/a> has reached a settlement in the $300 million copyright infringement lawsuit that accused the singer of stealing her 2013 hit \u201cWe Can\u2019t Stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cyrus\u2019 lawyers previously revealed a settlement agreement had been made in a December 12th letter that would be filed \u201cpending payment of the settlement proceeds.\u201d Terms of the settlement were not revealed.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives for Cyrus and RCA Records did not respond to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, filed in 2018, was made by Jamaican songwriter Michael May, who alleged that \u201cWe Can\u2019t Stop\u201d replicated his 1988 track \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xv1VO4aCrnI\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">We Run Things<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>May, who performs under the moniker Flourgon, claimed that Cyrus and her label, Sony Corp\u2019s RCA Records, stole material such as the hook \u201cWe run things. Things no run we,\u201d which she performed as \u201cWe run things. Things don\u2019t run we,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-music-miley-cyrus\/miley-cyrus-settles-300-million-lawsuit-claiming-she-stole-we-cant-stop-idUSKBN1Z229F?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=entertainmentNews\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">reports Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Together, May, Cyrus and Sony \u2013 along with a production team that includes Mike Will Made It \u2013 filed documents in Manhattan federal court on Friday to dismiss the lawsuit \u201cwith prejudice,\u201d which is a final judgment that stops the plaintiff from filing the lawsuit again.<\/p>\n<p>Cyrus\u2019 partying anthem \u201cWe Can\u2019t Stop\u201d was released by RCA Records in June 2013 as the lead single on her fourth studio album&nbsp;<em>Bangerz<\/em>.
