The surviving members of Nirvana<\/a> reunited in Los Angeles Saturday for a special one-night-only performance as Dave Grohl<\/a> was joined by Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear at the 2019 Art of Elysium Gala, an annual fundraiser that connects artists with children and communities in need.<\/p>\n

Playing before an enraptured crowd at the Hollywood Palladium that included everyone from Billy Idol to Bella Hadid, the three tore through a five-song set of Nirvana\u2019s hits, with Beck, St. Vincent and Violet Grohl (Dave\u2019s 13-year-old daughter) taking over lead vocals from the late Kurt Cobain. The event marked the first time the trio has played together since September 2018, when Novoselic joined Grohl and Smear onstage during a Foo Fighters concert in Seattle<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, St. Vincent kicked off the show with \u201cLithium,\u201d the same song she performed at Nirvana\u2019s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony<\/a> in 2014.<\/p>\n

Beck took the mic next to sing \u201cIn Bloom,\u201d with Grohl and Clark on background vocals, then introduced \u201cBeen a Son\u201d as the song that put him in \u201cthe most insane mosh pit [at the Palladium]\u201d when Nirvana played the iconic Sunset Boulevard venue almost three decades earlier.<\/p>\n

Grohl stayed behind the drum kit for the entire set and didn\u2019t speak much, though Novoselic did thank the crowd for coming and asked for, \u201cA cheer for Kurt Cobain\u201d (the audience responded enthusiastically). As for what brought the band back together: \u201cWe couldn\u2019t resist the temptation,\u201d Novoselic said.<\/p>\n

When Grohl finally took the mic, it was to introduce his daughter, Violet, who joined the group on stage to perform \u201cHeart-Shaped Box.\u201d The teenager quickly won over the crowd with her steely disposition and angsty rendition of the track, which was first released in 1993, a full 13 years before she was born.<\/p>\n

The set finished with the group performing David Bowie\u2019s \u201cThe Man Who Sold the World,\u201d famously covered by Cobain for Nirvana\u2019s MTV Unplugged in New York<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Other performers at Saturday\u2019s fundraiser included Cheap Trick, L7 and Marilyn Manson, who was accompanied by Shooter Jennings and Linda Perry for \u201cThe Dope Show\u201d and the crowd-pleasing, \u201cSweet Dreams (Are Made of This)\u201d. On the red carpet, Manson said he was excited to be on the same bill as Grohl and company. \u201cI saw Nirvana play with Jane\u2019s Addiction in Miami when they were on the \u2018In Utero\u2019 tour,\u201d he recalled, \u201cand the guys have always been nice to me. I sadly never got to meet Kurt [before he died],\u201d he continued, \u201cbut I\u2019m friends with Courtney\u2026 tentatively,\u201d he added with a smirk.<\/p>\n

Other guests, from Moby to X Ambassadors all praised the impact of Nirvana not only on popular music, but on their own careers as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first time you hear Kurt Cobain\u2019s voice you can\u2019t help but connect to it,\u201d said X Ambassadors\u2019 lead singer Sam Harris. \u201cIt\u2019s just got this visceral, powerful feeling that you want to emulate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was 13, Dave [Grohl] married a close family friend of mine and gave me my first drum set,\u201d added drummer Adam Levin. \u201cYou can\u2019t even put into words how incredible his career is; he\u2019s been such an inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for Moby, he credits Nirvana \u2014 and a couple ex-roommates \u2014 for getting him into rock. \u201cI wasn\u2019t cool, but when I lived in New York in the late 80s and early 90s, I had roommates who were these really cool indie rockers that would play My Bloody Valentine and Nirvana and all that super obscure indie rock of the late 80s,\u201d he explained, adding, \u201cI never met Kurt, but I\u2019m friends with Krist and Dave, which makes it so exciting to see them play together again.\u201d<\/p>\n

This was the 13th year of The Art of Elysium\u2019s \u201cHeaven\u201d gala. This year\u2019s theme was \u201cHEAVEN is Rock and Roll,\u201d a theme curated by event partners, WE ARE HEAR, the publishing firm-slash-management and production agency founded by songwriter Linda Perry and music producer Kerry Brown. Proceeds from the evening go toward supporting The Art of Elysium\u2019s roster of programs that pair volunteer artists with communities or individuals in the midst of physical, social, emotional or mental upheaval.<\/p>\n
