David Byrne<\/a> discussed his hit Broadway show American Utopia<\/em><\/a> and what led him to become an American citizen after six decades on this week\u2019s CBS Sunday Morning<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a conversation with Serena Altschul, the former Talking Heads<\/a> bandleader talked about how he turned his 2018 album American Utopia<\/em><\/a> into a Broadway show.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re gonna take you on a whole journey that\u2019s not just a bunch of songs, and you\u2019re gonna have a party,\u201d he explained. \u201cBut you\u2019re gonna be at a different place emotionally and intellectually or whatever by the end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Byrne also discussed the demise of the Talking Heads. \u201cYou\u2019re really tight. You\u2019re friends and making a living together. It\u2019s really high pressure. In certain ways, it\u2019s just never gonna last,\u201d he told Altschul.<\/p>\n

He also revealed the advice he\u2019d give to himself in the early days of the band: \u201cDon\u2019t worry David Byrne, it\u2019s gonna be okay. You don\u2019t have to panic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Byrne also touched on immigrating to the U.S. at the age of eight from Scotland saying he felt like \u201can outsider.\u201d<\/p>\n

But music helped him become more comfortable in his own skin. \u201cEven though I was painfully shy, I could put myself on stage and perform and do really sometimes wacky things. I had no fear on stage. And then coming off the stage, I was frozen as far as social interaction,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until 2012 that he\u2019d become a citizen of the U.S.<\/a>, which was the result of \u201can unlikely run-in at the voting booth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Cause I was busted,\u201d he laughed. \u201cI firmly believed that green card holders could vote in elections as long as they didn\u2019t vote for president. And I did it! I did it for many years. See? They were right. There\u2019s a lot<\/em> of voter fraud!\u201d<\/p>\n

American Utopia <\/em>is set to end its Broadway run in February.<\/p>\n
