Cott\u2019s interview happened to be with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/mick-jagger\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mick-jagger\" data-tag=\"mick-jagger\">Mick Jagger<\/a> for <em><span class=\"s1\">Rolling Stone<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI thought, \u2018This is it,&#8217;\u201d Russell says. \u201c\u2018I\u2019m happy for the rest of my life.&#8217;\u201d Russell would become one of the most prominent photographers in rock, capturing the Beatles, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/rolling-stones\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rolling-stones\" data-tag=\"rolling-stones\">Rolling Stones<\/a>, and the Who. His new book, <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.ethanrussell.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Ethan Russell Photographs<\/i><\/a>, is a collection of these iconic images.<\/p>\n<p>Russell\u2019s photographs range from album cover shots like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/linda-ronstadt\/\" id=\"auto-tag_linda-ronstadt\" data-tag=\"linda-ronstadt\">Linda Ronstadt<\/a>\u2019s <em>Hasten Down the Wind<\/em> to intimate photos of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/john-lennon\/\" id=\"auto-tag_john-lennon\" data-tag=\"john-lennon\">John Lennon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/yoko-ono\/\" id=\"auto-tag_yoko-ono\" data-tag=\"yoko-ono\">Yoko Ono<\/a>. The couple invited Russell to their home in the suburbs of London, where Russell arrived to an unlocked front door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s not the easiest person on the planet, but I got to have such respect for the two of them for what they put up with,\u201d Russell says. \u201cThey were vilified, but she in particular was vilified for 40 years. They really loved each other, and you can see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Around 1978, Russell quit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/photography\/\" id=\"auto-tag_photography\" data-tag=\"photography\">photography<\/a> and began directing films. He became inspired to transition into filmmaking after he photographed the book that accompanied the Who\u2019s <em>Quadrophenia<\/em> in 1973. \u201cI didn\u2019t think people would take me seriously as a director if I was still taking pictures,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-contextual-player\">\n<h3> Popular on Rolling Stone <\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Still, he reflects on his time as a photographer during the Sixties and Seventies as a pivotal time in music. \u201cI had a gift for it and I think I took it for granted,\u201d he says. \u201cI think it\u2019s historically true and fair to say that it was this generation of people that brought the singer-songwriter into popular music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was around them, I was very shy,\u201d he says of the musicians he shot. \u201cI very seldom told them what to do.\u201d Which worked out: \u201cYou get the most interesting pictures when the people <span class=\"s1\">are not <\/span>engaged with having their picture taken.
