{"id":974296,"date":"2020-01-07T19:14:21","date_gmt":"2020-01-08T02:14:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=934612"},"modified":"2020-01-07T19:14:21","modified_gmt":"2020-01-08T02:14:21","slug":"sonos-sues-google-over-alleged-tech-infringement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kfmu\/music-news\/sonos-sues-google-over-alleged-tech-infringement\/","title":{"rendered":"Sonos Sues Google Over Alleged Tech Infringement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/SonosMove.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><span>Home speaker company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/sonos\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sonos\" data-tag=\"sonos\">Sonos<\/a> on Tuesday filed a lawsuit against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/google\/\" id=\"auto-tag_google\" data-tag=\"google\">Google<\/a>, alleging that the tech giant took Sonos\u2019 patented technology for its own products, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/07\/technology\/sonos-sues-google.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>New York Times<\/em> reports<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to lawsuit documents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/1\/7\/21055048\/sonos-google-lawsuit-sues-speakers-assistant-amazon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">obtained by The Verge<\/a>, Google got access to Sonos\u2019 patented technology through a 2013 partnership and has allegedly been infringing on Sonos\u2019 patents since 2015 through over a dozen products including Google\u2019s flagship Pixel phones and various Google Home devices.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sonos has alleged that Google has subsidized prices on its patent-infringed products, flooding the market with cheaper options that have hurt their business. Google\u2019s cheapest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/smart-speaker\/\" id=\"auto-tag_smart-speaker\" data-tag=\"smart-speaker\">smart speaker<\/a>, the Google Home Mini, has a base price of $49 and is currently on sale for $25<strong>,<\/strong> while Sonos\u2019 cheapest speaker costs $179. The suit also claims that the damage from Google\u2019s alleged infringement is increased as the company collects user data that further bolsters its ad and search services.<\/p>\n<p><span>Sonos believes both Google and Amazon have violated Sonos\u2019 patents, but&nbsp;<\/span><span>the company is suing only Google because it couldn\u2019t \u201crisk battling two tech giants in court at once,\u201d the <em>Times<\/em> reported.&nbsp;<\/span><span>Sonos is suing Google in both federal district court and the United States International Trade Commission, as they seek undisclosed financial damages alongside a ban on the sale of Google\u2019s smartphones, speakers and laptops in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p> <!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/smart-speakers-wireless-headphones-cta-859560\/\">The smart speaker space is thriving<\/a>, with tech giants like Apple, Amazon and Google all selling their own speakers. The Consumer Technology Association projected smart speakers alone to pull in about $3 billion in revenue for 2019, according to the Association\u2019s midyear report.<\/p>\n<p><span>Sonos CEO Patrick Spence said in a statement that the company had warned Google multiple times about the alleged violation at least four times since 2016<\/span><i><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><span>before filing the suit. <\/span><span>\u201cGoogle is an important partner with whom we have collaborated successfully for years,\u201d Spence said. \u201cHowever, Google has been blatantly and knowingly copying our patented technology in creating its audio products. Despite our repeated &amp; extensive efforts over the last few years, Google has not shown any willingness to work with us on a mutually beneficial solution.
