I\u2019m not going to get my feelings hurt if a Basquiat aficionado doesn\u2019t like my work.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_934687\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" readability=\"32\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-934687\" class=\"wp-image-934687\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/chadsmith-Roadshow_ViolentViolet_Drumhead.jpg\" alt=\"violent violet drumhead\" width=\"350\" height=\"377\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-934687\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cViolent Violet\u201d by Chad Smith<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Smith\u2019s venture into the art world began in 2015 when Los Angeles visual art team SceneFour approached the musician. They\u2019d previously worked with drummers like Black Sabbath\u2019s Bill Ward, the Grateful Dead\u2019s Mickey Hart and Slayer\u2019s Dave Lombardo to create eclectic, abstract works that attempted to capture the essence of their music in a visual form. \u201cI thought their ideas were really interesting,\u201d says Smith, who had never previously considered creating visual art. \u201cIt\u2019s always fun to change and grow and challenge yourself and do something different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The process began with Smith playing drums with lighted sticks at SIR Studios in Los Angeles while the SceneFour team photographed him. \u201cThey then take the images and manipulate them in different ways,\u201d Smith says. \u201cThey use different colors, textures and depths. I\u2019ll say to them, \u2018I like that. I don\u2019t like this. What if we did this?\u2019 The whole process takes a few months, though I\u2019m not actually there with them and the printers and sheets and everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p>In some ways, the process reminded him of his day job with the Chili Peppers. \u201cIt\u2019s the same thing where you find the right people that are on the same page as you with a vision,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd you stay open to new things and introduce good ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His first collection, <em>Parallax<\/em>, debuted in 2016. His second one, <em>The Art of Chad Smith<\/em>, is just rolling out now. Unlike <em>Parallax<\/em>, he enhanced some of these works himself with paint, chalk and even a screwdriver. \u201cI wanted to add some things to make them more special,\u201d he says. \u201cI had this table of tools at my disposal and I just got inspired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WWIn8nedXUk?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>He\u2019ll be appearing at the Russell Collection Fine Art gallery on January 11th and January 12th, but isn\u2019t quite sure what\u2019ll happen when he arrives. \u201cThey talked about me playing, but I don\u2019t want it to be any sort of performance-based thing,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m not going to play drums with lighted sticks in the gallery. That seems a little \u2026 I don\u2019t like that route. I\u2019m just going to show up and see what happens. There might be, like, three people there. We\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He plans on hitting two more art galleries across America in February. \u201cI\u2019m doing it on the weekends when I\u2019m not doing my day job,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019ll see. If I\u2019m not digging it and it\u2019s too weird, maybe I won\u2019t show up. Smith knows fans are anxious to hear what they have planned beyond the <a href=\"https:\/\/redhotchilipeppers.com\/events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">festivals currently on the books for 2020<\/a>, but he\u2019s not willing to say much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was given strict orders for this interview: \u2018DON\u2019T TALK ABOUT THE BAND,&#8217;\u201d he says. \u201cBut, yes, John is back in the band and everyone knows that. We\u2019re psyched. The festivals are the only shows booked. For now, we\u2019ll mostly be concentrating on new songs and writing a new record.
