{"id":974339,"date":"2020-01-09T15:38:04","date_gmt":"2020-01-09T22:38:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=935699"},"modified":"2020-01-09T15:38:04","modified_gmt":"2020-01-09T22:38:04","slug":"justice-department-details-alleged-live-nation-wrongdoing-in-new-filing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kfmu\/music-news\/justice-department-details-alleged-live-nation-wrongdoing-in-new-filing\/","title":{"rendered":"Justice Department Details Alleged Live Nation Wrongdoing in New Filing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ticketmaster.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>One month after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/live-nation\/\" id=\"auto-tag_live-nation\" data-tag=\"live-nation\">Live Nation<\/a> and the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/justice-department\/\" id=\"auto-tag_justice-department\" data-tag=\"justice-department\">Justice Department<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/live-nation-department-of-justice-settlement-927528\/\">agreed to a settlement regarding Live Nation\u2019s ticketing practices<\/a>, the Justice Department has filed court documents detailing claims of the company\u2019s violations of its antitrust agreements and setting forth stricter terms going forward.<\/p>\n<p><span>The documents, filed on Wednesday and obtained by <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, detail multiple instances in which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/live-nation-entertainment\/\" id=\"auto-tag_live-nation-entertainment\" data-tag=\"live-nation-entertainment\">Live Nation Entertainment<\/a> has allegedly coerced venues to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ticketmaster\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ticketmaster\" data-tag=\"ticketmaster\">Ticketmaster<\/a> \u2014 the ticketing giant that the company acquired in 2010 \u2014 instead of competing ticket vendors. Critics of the merger have long complained of stifled competition, and last month, rumors started that the DOJ was preparing a lawsuit against Live Nation for strong-arming venues, an action that stands in violation of an agreement that Live Nation made with the government in 2010.&nbsp;Last month, Live Nation and the DOJ reached a settlement agreement and also announced tentative new rules to govern the ticketing behemoth.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Wednesday\u2019s filing details six alleged violations from Live Nation dating back to 2012 to as recently as March 2019. The six venues, which have not been publicly identified by the government to protect them from further potential action from Live Nation, had been forced to use Ticketmaster to avoid losing Live Nation\u2019s concert business, the filing said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p><span>Ticketmaster and Live Nation executives explicitly told venues they would pull all their concert business when they moved away from Ticketmaster, the DOJ claimed in the filing, with one venue executive telling antitrust agents that Ticketmaster\u2019s president allegedly said \u201cTicketmaster\u2019s response would be nuclear\u201d if they left, and that \u201cLive Nation would never do another show in our building.\u201d <\/span><span>Another venue reported that it had signed a ticketing agreement with a Ticketmaster competitor, and Live Nation stopped contacting the venue for concert opportunities until one month later, when the venue backed out of the deal to sign with Ticketmaster and was \u201cback in the family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-contextual-player\">\n<h3> Popular on Rolling Stone <\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span>In a statement issued to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> Thursday, Live Nation said it would continue to fight the Justice Department on the allegations. <\/span><span>\u201cLive Nation settled this matter to make clear that it has no interest in threatening or retaliating against venues that consider or choose other ticketing companies,\u201d a rep for the company said. \u201cWe strongly disagree with the DOJ\u2019s allegations in the filing and the conclusions they seek to draw from six isolated episodes among some 5,000 ticketing deals negotiated during the life of the consent decree. Nevertheless, in keeping with our decision to settle, our focus is now on bringing this matter to its conclusion and continuing to deliver the best live event experiences to fans everywhere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The DOJ\u2019s Wednesday filings included new guidelines for Live Nation \u2014 including stipulations that it undergo monitoring by an \u201cindependent trustee\u201d selected by the U.S. government. <span>The federal government\u2019s actions against Live Nation come as online ticket vending continues to consolidate.
