He was 42.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Weebie, real name Jerome Cosey, was hospitalized for a ruptured artery, underwent surgery and died of related complications while still in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The musician\u2019s death was mourned by everyone from the mayor of New Orleans, LaToya Cantrell, to hip-hop luminaries like Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg. \u201cHe was an iconic personality, a New Orleans legend, and a beloved friend,\u201d Cantrell wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B7HfUZClvM7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Instagram<\/a>. \u201cHe was the Bounce King, who showed us how to move, how to love, and how to bring passion and humanity to everything we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Lil Wayne also shared a photo of Weebie, writing, \u201cStill haven\u2019t been able to find [the] words to express how I feel. RIP to a true New Orleans legend.\u201d Snoop Dogg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B7HwbYqHLNA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reposted<\/a> an old video of himself with Weebie from when they were working on the remix to the latter\u2019s 2014 hit, \u201cLet Me Find Out,\u201d writing, \u201cThank u for letting me rock with u.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B7Jg0DugkkP\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\" readability=\"-5.6822429906542\"><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">5th Ward Weebie had been at the center of much of New Orleans hip-hop dating back to the late Nineties. His debut album, <i>Show the World<\/i>, came out in 1999 and he appeared on a Top Five rap hit with his feature on Kane and Abel\u2019s 2000 song <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=W3DJGO4HOLQ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cShake It Like a Dog.\u201d<\/a> He later collaborated with Master P on his 2002 single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=h0vkFPT2eDo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cRock It,\u201d<\/a> notched a local hit in the wake of Hurricane Katrina with 2005\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fpwgThDE48w\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cFuck Katrina,\u201d<\/a> and soon after he helped fuel the rise of bounce music with his Bounce King Status mixtape series, which launched in 2006.<\/p>\n<p><!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But Weebie is perhaps best known for his 2014 viral hit, \u201cLet Me Find Out,\u201d a wickedly funny track centered around outrageous insults that appeared on <i>Rolling Stone<\/i>\u2019s list of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/20-essential-new-orleans-bounce-songs-705706\/\">20 most essential bounce songs<\/a>. The song significantly boosted his profile beyond New Orleans, to the point that when Drake wanted to incorporate bounce into his own music, he turned to 5th Ward Weebie for help. In a 2014 interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/entertainment_life\/music\/article_0eed7349-5a96-5d2f-9d77-041f93ea0c25.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><i>The Times-Picayune<\/i><\/a>, Weebie explained the origins of the song, saying, \u201cWhen I was writing the verse I wrote, \u2018Let me find out there\u2019s booty pads underneath.\u2019 When I wrote that line the spark came in, everyone laughed.
