Gary Clark Jr. talked the Grammys, religion, his new album This Land<\/em> and his Texas beginnings in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning<\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was raised real religious \u2013 Baptist, go to church every Sunday. The fear of God was very present in the house,\u201d Clark Jr. said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not, like, a religious person. I quit going to church a long time ago. But, like, music is my religion, I guess you could say. It\u2019s calming, it can hype me up. It\u2019s everything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In the career retrospective, CBS Sunday Morning<\/em> correspondent Kristine Johnson noted that Eric Clapton once said that Clark Jr. has the best \u201cflow\u201d he\u2019d seen in a guitarist since Jimi Hendrix. \u201cOh damn,\u201d the guitarist said of the compliment. \u201cPressure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Clark Jr., who won a Grammy in 2014 for Traditional R&B Performance, is up for four more awards at next week\u2019s awards: Best Contemporary Blues Album (This Land<\/em>) and Best Rock Song, Best Rock Performance and Best Music Video (\u201cThis Land\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not special. I\u2019m just a simple dude, simple dude from Austin, Texas who picked up a guitar and [explosion],\u201d Clark Jr. added.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the Grammys, the guitarist has also been tapped to participate in both MusiCares\u2019 tribute to Aerosmith<\/a> next week and the Let\u2019s Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince<\/em> special<\/a> later this year.<\/span><\/p>\n
