Stephen Malkmus<\/a> talks Three Dog Night, smoking weed, and owning a racehorse in the latest installment of \u201cThe First Time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Malkmus kicks off by describing the first song he ever wrote, \u201cPsychopath,\u201d comparing the key to Dr. Demento\u2019s \u201cThey\u2019re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard for a 12-year-old to be a psychopath,\u201d he says. \u201cI think the stats are really low on mass murders at age 12.\u201d<\/p>\n

Malkmus can\u2019t recall what his first concert was \u2014 either Elton John or Neil Diamond \u2014 but he does remember the first song he fell in love with: Three Dog Night\u2019s \u201cJoy to the World.\u201d \u201cI probably mentioned that before,\u201d he notes. \u201cYou have to be really into me to know that I mentioned it.\u201d He describes how it\u2019s a kid\u2019s rock song, even if it was performed by \u201ctwentysomething perverts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former Pavement<\/a> frontman admits he\u2019s never fallen in love with a guitar. \u201cIt\u2019s more of a working relationship,\u201d he says, cradling his prescription glasses in his palm. \u201cSometimes it happens at work, and that can be good and bad. But we keep it in the friend zone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the clip, Malkmus suspects that he doesn\u2019t think smoked weed until the ninth grade. \u201cI don\u2019t think I tried it in eighth grade, so I feel like that\u2019s good.\u201d He remembers owning a racehorse named Speedy Service with Bob Nastanovich in 1994. \u201cHe\u2019s like Uncut Gems<\/em>,\u201d he says about the Pavement percussionist, referring to 2019 movie starring Adam Sandler. \u201cHe\u2019s basically that guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Malkmus\u2019 new album, Traditional Techniques,<\/em> is out today. He previously released the singles \u201cXian Man,\u201d<\/a> \u201cBrainwashed,<\/a>\u201d and \u201cShadowbanned.<\/a>\u201d He\u2019ll reunite with Pavement<\/a> in-between his upcoming solo tour. \u201cIt\u2019s been on people\u2019s minds for a while from the Pavement camp, and it\u2019s been 10 years since the last one, and some things were lining up,\u201d he told Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> of the reunion. Then these guys from Prima, who I know well through touring and going to Barcelona and hanging with them and partying with them, whatever\u2026They came up with this plan, and I just was like, \u2018Yeah, OK.\u2019 I guess I would say it\u2019s been a while, and also those guys are cool. Is that OK?\u201d<\/p>\n
