In the past two years, Winston Duke<\/a> has had one of the swiftest and most impressive rises in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

He earned raves for his turn as M\u2019Baku in Black Panther<\/i><\/a> (his first major film role), then starred in Jordan Peele<\/a>\u2019s Us<\/i><\/a> and is now co-starring alongside Mark Wahlberg<\/a> in the new thriller, Spenser Confidential<\/i>, which hits Netflix Friday, March 6th.<\/p>\n

In the latest installment of Rolling Stone<\/i>\u2018s \u201cThe First Time<\/a>,\u201d Duke talks about life as a burgeoning star, including the wonder of seeing his face on a billboard for the first time and the surreal \u2014 and surprisingly dangerous \u2014 first time he was recognized on the street.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was walking the streets here in Manhattan, and this black truck, this black SUV, tinted, literally almost pushed me onto the side of the road,\u201d Duke recalls. \u201cAnd they stopped and the glass slowly came down and it was this Nigerian dude who was like, \u2018I\u2019m a big fan of you man!\u2019 I was like, \u2018I was really scared bro, I thought you were coming for me!\u2019 It was a very awkward way of doing it, but it was love.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Duke talks about meeting Wahlberg for the first time at the Spenser Confidential<\/i> table read (\u201cHe was super swaggy \u2014 shows up in just a white T with some Jeans, Air Maxs and a big silver chain\u201d) and hanging with Peele after the latter won an Academy Award for Get Out<\/i> (\u201cHe had his Oscar, he wasn\u2019t letting that thing go\u201d). Duke also spoke about the first time he heard Luniz\u2019s \u201cI Got 5 on It,\u201d which would go on to be prominently featured in Us.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was probably when I first came to this country [from Trinidad and Tobago], it was like in the Nineties,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019d never heard a sound like that before, I\u2019d never heard music like that before\u2026 Mad vibes.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the end of the episode, Duke spoke about the origins of his career and the challenge of memorizing Shakespeare in his first high school acting class. \u201cI remembered not knowing what the hell was going on and I just made it up with thy\u2019s and thou\u2019s and this\u2019,\u201d he says. \u201cMy acting teacher at the time, I remember him just thinking it was funny and he kept encouraging that playful nature.\u201d<\/p>\n
