He was 81.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father,\u201d his family said in a statement. \u201cA solitary man with a heart driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other,\u201d the family statement read. \u201cAs private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Withers grew up in Slab Fork, West Virginia and didn\u2019t begin his professional career until he was in his was in his early thirties. But after just a handful of albums, he walked away from the business and lived a deeply private life. \u201cWhat few songs I wrote during my brief career, there ain\u2019t a genre that somebody didn\u2019t record them in,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/bill-withers-the-soul-man-who-walked-away-111535\/\">told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> in 2014<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m not a virtuoso, but I was able to write songs that people could identify with.
