No cause of death was revealed, but guitarist Andy Scott \u2014 the last surviving member of the band\u2019s classic lineup \u2014 said \u201chis health was failing\u201d recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt is with a heavy heart that we announce at 8:25am PT today, Steve Priest, founding member of The Sweet, passed away,\u201d Priest\u2019s family <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SPSweetBand\/status\/1268607839989141504\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a>. \u201cHe is survived by his wife, Maureen, three daughters, Lisa, Danielle &amp; Maggie and 3 grandchildren, Jordan, Jade &amp; Hazel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHe was the best bass player I ever played with. All my love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sweet\u2019s hit-making classic lineup formed in 1970, when Scott joined Priest, drummer Mick Tucker and singer Brian Connolly. One of the signature acts of the Seventies glam rock scene, Sweet released a string of hit singles over the course of the decade, which the band partly spent as the studio entity for the songwriting duo Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, who wrote the band\u2019s hits \u201cWig-Wam Bam,\u201d \u201cLittle Willy,\u201d \u201cCo Co\u201d and \u201cBallroom Blitz.\u201d The latter track \u2014<\/span> <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/20-songs-that-defined-the-early-seventies-251802\/the-sweet-the-ballroom-blitz-1973-252206\/\">one of <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2019s 20 Songs That Defined the Early Seventies<\/a> \u2014 featured Priest\u2019s high-pitched vocals singing the pre-chorus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ewFBuYHldeY?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The members of Sweet would later co-write their 1975 hit single \u201cFox on the Run,\u201d with Priest\u2019s distinct voice singing backup; when Connolly left Sweet following the release of 1978\u2019s <em>Level Headed<\/em>, Priest and Scott assumed lead vocals for the band. However, Sweet broke up in 1981, after which point Priest largely stepped away from music and moved to Los Angeles with his wife, Capitol Records publicity director Maureen O\u2019 Connor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While Scott continued to perform the band\u2019s music under the moniker Andy Scott\u2019s Sweet, Priest held the band\u2019s copyright in North America, where he played shows as Steve Priest\u2019s Sweet from 2006 until his death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CBBfESMgVMg\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">wrote on social media<\/a> Thursday, \u201cVery sad to hear of the passing of Steve Priest from&nbsp;<span class=\"s2\">@spsweetband<\/span>. They gave me one of my earliest memories of great hard rock on the radio as a kid and <em>Desolation Boulevard<\/em> still holds up as one of rock\u2019s greatest albums from that period. Steve\u2019s wife was the publicist for <span class=\"s2\">@megadeth<\/span>&nbsp;during much of our&nbsp;<span class=\"s2\">@capitolrecords<\/span>&nbsp;years and meeting him was one of the highlights of my professional career.
