{"id":977257,"date":"2020-06-05T14:21:11","date_gmt":"2020-06-05T20:21:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=1010925"},"modified":"2020-06-05T14:21:11","modified_gmt":"2020-06-05T20:21:11","slug":"paul-mccartney-i-want-justice-for-george-floyds-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kfmu\/music-news\/paul-mccartney-i-want-justice-for-george-floyds-family\/","title":{"rendered":"Paul McCartney: \u2018I Want Justice for George Floyd\u2019s Family\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/mccartney-on-george-floyd.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/paul-mccartney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_paul-mccartney\" data-tag=\"paul-mccartney\">Paul McCartney<\/a> posted a statement of support for protests for racial justice on Friday. \u201cWe all need to work together to overcome racism in any form,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PaulMcCartney\/photos\/a.488766413312\/10158785492183313\/?type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">he wrote<\/a>. \u201cWe need to learn more, listen more, talk more, educate ourselves and, above all, take action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also added links to <a href=\"https:\/\/blacklivesmatter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Black Lives Matter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/colorofchange.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Color of Change<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naacp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">NAACP<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.standuptoracism.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Stand Up to Racism<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joincampaignzero.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Campaign Zero<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communityjusticeexchange.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Community Justice Exchange<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>McCartney then recounted a concert the Beatles were booked to play at Jacksonville\u2019s Gator Bowl in 1964, and how when they learned that it would be a segregated audience they refused to play. \u201cWe never play to segregated audiences and we aren\u2019t going to start now,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/greenlining.org\/blog-category\/2013\/1964-civil-rights-and-the-beatles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">John Lennon said<\/a> at the time. \u201cI\u2019d sooner lose our appearance money.\u201d The concert ended up being the first nonsegregated audience there. After that, the Beatles incorporated a clause in their contracts guaranteeing audiences would not be segregated.<\/p>\n<p>McCartney explained the band\u2019s stance in <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=clVHDwAAQBAJ&amp;lpg=PT178&amp;ots=74wl1UmpY0&amp;dq=It%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20out%20of%20any%20goody-goody%20thing%3B%20we%20just%20thought%2C%20%E2%80%98Why%20should%20you%20separate%20black%20people%20from%20white%3F&amp;pg=PT178#v=onepage&amp;q=It%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20out%20of%20any%20goody-goody%20thing;%20we%20just%20thought,%20%E2%80%98Why%20should%20you%20separate%20black%20people%20from%20white?&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a 1966 interview<\/a>. \u201cWe weren\u2019t into prejudice,\u201d he said. \u201cWe were always keen on mixed-race audiences. With that being our attitude, shared by all the group, we never wanted to play South Africa or any places where blacks would be separated. It wasn\u2019t out of any goody-goody thing; we just thought, \u2018Why should you separate black people from white? That\u2019s stupid, isn\u2019t it?&#8217;\u201d And two years after that, he penned \u201cBlackbird\u201d as a tribute to the Civil Rights movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel sick and angry that here we are almost 60 years later and the world is in shock at the horrific scenes of the senseless murder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/george-floyd\/\" id=\"auto-tag_george-floyd\" data-tag=\"george-floyd\">George Floyd<\/a> at the hands of police racism, along with the countless others that came before,\u201d McCartney added in his post. \u201cI want justice for George Floyd\u2019s family, I want justice for all those who have died and suffered. Saying nothing is not an option.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read Paul McCartney\u2019s full statement:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>As we continue to see the protests and demonstrations across the world, I know many of us want to know just what we can be doing to help. None of us have all the answers and there is no quick fix but we need change. We all need to work together to overcome racism in any form. We need to learn more, listen more, talk more, educate ourselves and, above all, take action.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In 1964, the Beatles were due to play Jacksonville in the US and we found out that it was going to be to a segregated audience. It felt wrong. We said, \u2018We\u2019re not doing that!\u2019 And the concert we did do was to their first non-segregated audience. We then made sure this was in our contract. To us it seemed like common sense.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I feel sick and angry that here we are almost 60 years later, and the world is in shock at the horrific scenes of the senseless murder of George Floyd at the hands of police racism, along with the countless others that came before.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>All of us here support and stand alongside all those who are protesting and raising their voices at this time.
