Pearl Jam<\/a> released the uncensored version of their \u201cJeremy\u201d video for the first time Friday to mark National Gun Violence<\/a> Awareness Day.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ten<\/em> song and its corresponding Mark Pellington-directed video \u2014 which won Video of the Year at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards \u2014 detailed the story of a bullied teenager who shot himself in front of his classmates.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the original, edited 1992 video, the suicide is insinuated, but in the uncensored (and newly remastered) version that Pearl Jam uploaded Friday, Jeremy \u2014 played by actor Trevor Wilson \u2014 is shown placing the gun in his mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe increase in gun violence since the debut of \u2018Jeremy\u2019 is staggering. We have released the uncensored version of the video which was unavailable in 1992 with TV censorship laws,\u201d Pearl Jam said in a statement.<\/span> \u201cWe can prevent gun deaths whether mass shootings, deaths of despair, law enforcement, or accidental.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, Pearl Jam updated their early Nineties-era \u201cChoices\u201d t-shirt<\/a>, which is now available to purchase with proceeds going toward the band\u2019s Vitalogy Foundation to support organizations working to prevent gun violence in the United States. The back of the shirt originally stated \u201c9 out of 10 kids prefer crayons to guns,\u201d while the \u201cChoices 2020\u201d shirt now reads \u201c10 out of 10 kids prefer crayons to guns.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe events of this past week have underscored the importance of this issue and remind us that Black Americans are ten times more likely than white Americans to die by gun homicide,\u201d Pearl Jam added.<\/span><\/p>\n
