Congratulations are in order for the new Miss Universe, Miss Philippines Catriona Gray<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green<\/strong> was the first runner-up and Miss Venezuela\u00a0Sthefany Guti\u00e9rrez\u00a0<\/strong>was the second runner-up.<\/p>\n

The 2018 Miss Universe<\/strong> pageant was held in Bangkok, Thailand where nearly a hundred women from around the world vied for the coveted crown. Steve Harvey<\/a><\/strong> returned as the host and Ashley Graham<\/a><\/strong> co-hosted alongside Carson Kressley<\/strong> and Lu Sierra<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The competition whittled down to the final 5 women, which included Gray, Miss Vietnam H’Hen Nie<\/strong>, Miss Canada Marta Magdalena Stepien<\/strong>, Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green<\/strong> and Miss Venezuela Sthefany Guti\u00e9rrez<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In honor of\u00a0Miss Philippines winning Miss Universe 2018, here are five things to know about\u00a0Catriona Gray.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

1. She’s half-Scottish, half-Filipino<\/strong>:\u00a0Catriona’s father Ian Gray<\/strong> is Scottish and her mother\u00a0Normita Magnayon<\/strong> is Filipino.\u00a0She said during the pageant that she was “very, very close” to her parents, especially her father.<\/p>\n

As if that wasn’t international enough, the 24-year-old was born in Cairns, Australia and moved to the Philippines when she was 18, according to\u00a0Newsweek<\/em>.\u00a0<\/a>She reportedly used modeling money to buy a plane ticket from Australia to the Philippines to begin a career there, and the rest is history.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

2. She attended college in the U.S.:<\/strong> Catriona went to school at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. She received a degree in Music Theory and is also a singer.\u00a0At the Miss Universe pageant, Steve Harvey asked, “If you were going to write a\u00a0<\/span>song about your experience here\u00a0<\/span>at Miss Universe, what would you\u00a0<\/span>call it?”<\/span><\/p>\n

“As Miss\u00a0Philippines\u00a0I’ve\u00a0<\/span>always felt the love and support\u00a0<\/span>of the Filipino\u00a0people and I\u00a0<\/span>think I brought half of my\u00a0<\/span>country here tonight,” she responded. “I would\u00a0<\/span>name the song ‘Raise Your Flag’\u00a0<\/span>because I stand here not as one\u00a0<\/span>but as 104 million Filipinos!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Catriona expressed at another point in the night to Harvey, “Once I started music, it just\u00a0<\/span>was fulfilling in a way that\u00a0<\/span>everything else wasn’t.\u00a0<\/span>My mom told me even in the womb\u00a0<\/span>I was dancing.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

3. She has a signature runway move:<\/strong> Never underestimate the power of a strong runway walk! Catriona apparently has a signature twirl<\/a> she employs on the runway, which is also known as the “slow-mo twirl<\/a>.” It became a big hit and viral moment during the swimsuit portion<\/a> of the Miss Universe pageant.<\/p>\n

4. She’s dedicated to ending poverty in the Philippines:<\/strong>\u00a0The 24-year-old model is very vocal about poverty in the Philippines and has her own project called Paraiso: The Bright Beginnings Project<\/a>. She\u00a0has been working to raise money for a preschool and hopes to ease poverty, especially among children.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

5. She’s an avid traveler:<\/strong> Catriona loves traveling around the world and writes about her explorations<\/a> all over her blog, Cat’elle. She has written extensively about her travels across the Philippines, China, the United States and Vietnam. Catriona also seems to do a lot of journeying with her German-Filipino actor boyfriend Clint Bondad<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
