However, four years after making her onstage debut in West End plays like\u00a0<em>The Royal Family<\/em>, Emily found herself in presence of the critically-acclaimed actress on the set of\u00a0<em>The Devil Wears Prada<\/em> in 2005. Understandably, the young actress was starstruck.<\/p>\n<p>Then, she was entirely flabbergasted when Meryl complimented her on her role of Emily in <em>The Devil Wears<\/em> Prada,<em>\u00a0<\/em>soon after they wrapped filming. &#8220;She burst out of her trailer and the wig was off\u2014she was just Meryl\u2014and she was in a puffy jacket, and she was like, &#8216;You were so great&#8217;,&#8221; Blunt recalled in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/video\/emily-blunt-meryl-streep-s-stamp-of-approval-made-me-weep-1204355651660\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<em>Today<\/em>. &#8220;And I just started to like weep.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And over the years, Meryl has continued to be a close confidante, friend and\u00a0source of inspiration\u00a0for Blunt in more ways than one. In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/movies\/2018\/11\/29\/meryl-streep-emily-blunt-mary-poppins-returns\/\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a>, the Brit told\u00a0<em>Entertainment Weekly<\/em>, &#8220;[Meryl]\u00a0has, from the moment I met her, really been such a pinnacle for me to look up to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"65\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"20\">\n<p>The mutual respect they\u00a0formed\u00a0for one another as actors and friends continues to be a point of pride for Emily. She gushed to\u00a0<em>EW<\/em>, &#8220;She&#8217;s a friend. And she&#8217;s really been there with me from the beginning. That&#8217;s quite moving to me in some ways, that I&#8217;ve sort of grown up with Meryl being there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And Emily truly proved the depth of her talent to Meryl when she transformed from the snobby, high-brow character of Emily in\u00a0<em>Prada<\/em> to become the sweet Baker&#8217;s Wife in\u00a0<em>Into the Woods<\/em>, which Streep played The Witch in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps this ability to change roles, seemingly at the snap of a finger, was inspired by Meryl&#8217;s countless roles over the decades. In the same interview with\u00a0<em>EW<\/em>, Blunt revealed she is &#8220;inspired&#8221; by her friend&#8217;s &#8220;defiance [to] keep taking big swings and not conform and not get pigeonholed and not just be one thing or represent just one way of acting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"video-int-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"42\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-video-text\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"24\">\n<p>This persistence to be\u00a0a versatile actor worthy of being compared to the\u00a0<em>It&#8217;s Complicated<\/em> star\u00a0is evident in Emily&#8217;s impressive resum\u00e9. From musicals to horror movies, period pieces to action-packed thrillers, the\u00a0<em>Quiet Place<\/em>\u00a0star has done it all. But, she continues to\u00a0prove herself\u00a0to the\u00a0<em>Sophie&#8217;s Choice<\/em>\u00a0actress, even though she long ago earned Meryl&#8217;s approval.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If anything, her acting in\u00a0<em>Mary Poppins<\/em> simply reinforced Meryl&#8217;s beliefs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because Streep seems to believe that Emily has <em>always<\/em> had the talents of a star worthy of role like Mary Poppins. She told\u00a0<em>EW<\/em>, &#8220;I think Emily&#8217;s completely the same person that she was when I met her.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In\u00a0<em>The Devil Wears Prada<\/em>, she was some preposterously young age \u2014 I think she was 21? Streep explained, &#8220;Because she&#8217;s so smart, her wit informs everything she does. Even her tenderness is inflected with her smarts and her sense of humor and her, oh God, she just has a little curl of irony about her.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You know, they wrote [<em>Mary Poppins Returns<\/em>] for her. The songs were written for her, it&#8217;s absolutely in her wheelhouse, and it&#8217;s so specific that I don&#8217;t know who else could have done it the way she does it. She&#8217;s just crackerjack smart and beautiful and she has the thing that you can&#8217;t teach in the drama school, and that&#8217;s charm. She has it.
