For all the things that 2018\u00a0was,\u00a0it was not<\/em> the year of the long engagement.<\/p>\n

No, this year\u00a0celebrities seemingly took it upon themselves to single-handedly pick up the slack for\u00a0the regular people who studies show are waiting longer to get married, proving that you\u00a0don’t<\/em>\u00a0need to get to know each other for years\u2014or even\u00a0a<\/em> year\u2014before taking the plunge.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What can we attribute this new trend to?<\/p>\n

Let’s see, there’s baby fever, one-upping your friends, not wanting to be the last of your squad to get married, tax breaks,\u00a0encroaching\u00a0existential dread,\u00a0wanting to lock in a partner so you don’t have to face the apocalypse alone…<\/p>\n

Or were there just that many cases of two people falling head over heels in love and not wanting to wait another minute to spend forever together?<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Let’s just say, love was in the air, and kudos to every person who captured a bit of it to call their own.<\/p>\n

Of course, in that race to the altar, not every couple made it to the finish line.\u00a0Some things\u00a0that seemed like a great idea one day don’t always hold up after a few months. Still, cheers to those temporarily blinded by infatuation all the same.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

One minute Ratajkowski was dating\u00a0Jeff Magid\u00a0for years, and the next she was married to someone else altogether.<\/p>\n

The actress-model wed the producer<\/a>\u00a0at New York City Hall\u00a0on Feb. 23, reportedly after only a few weeks of dating.\u00a0“Sooo I have a surprise. I got married today,” Emily shared on Instagram.<\/p>\n

“When you don’t have a real wedding, it’s for you,” Ratajkowski told Harper’s Bazaar<\/em> about her secret-for-about-four-hours big day. “I wore what I wanted to wear. It really felt like the outfit that was most me, and that made me feel good.”<\/p>\n

But sure enough, the skeptics came calling.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“People came after my marriage, like, ‘Wow. I give it three weeks.’ I’m like, \u2018What?'” Ratajkowski told\u00a0 Marie Claire<\/a><\/em>. “No one can take women seriously on any choices that they make, especially if they’re unique to them and they don’t play into the way we think women should get married. It’s a constant writing-off.”<\/p>\n

And\u00a0it’s not as if she just bumped into Bear-McClard somewhere and decided he looked like the one. They were friends first\u2014and she sensed a connection long before they became a couple.<\/p>\n

“We knew each other for a long time before and he likes to joke, ‘yeah, everyone thinks we got married quickly, but you vetted me for two years,'” Ratajkowski told Busy Philipps<\/strong> on\u00a0Busy Tonight\u00a0<\/em>in November.\u00a0Asked when Sebastian became future husband material, Emily replied,\u00a0“Who all of a sudden changes the way they look at someone? No. I was always, like, ‘I probably shouldn’t hang out with that guy alone.'”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Surprise! Schumer didn’t just get engaged only days after people found out she\u00a0was dating again\u2014she got married, too!<\/p>\n

After going Instagram official with kissy photos taken at\u00a0Ellen DeGeneres<\/strong>‘ 60th birthday party, the comedian turned up hitched on Feb. 13<\/a>.\u00a0The groom: a chef who\u00a0presided over one of the hottest restaurants on Martha’s Vineyard, where he cooked for the Obamas and other hungry famous people. Also closing the gap from A to B, Fischer is the brother of Schumer’s longtime assistant. They appear to have started dating in November 2017.<\/p>\n

“Part of the thing that’s good about us getting married so quickly is that we’re so in love,” Schumer said on a visit to SiriusXM’s\u00a0You Up with Nikki Glaser<\/em>. “Every girl I know, if they get proposed to they’re like, ‘Oh, now? Now that I can’t have kids!'”<\/p>\n

Their first child together<\/a> is due\u00a0in 2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Add Williams to the list of 2018 brides who did\u00a0not<\/em> see where their year was headed when the clock struck midnight on Jan. 1. Earlier this year the Oscar-nominated actress was dating a finance guy, and then\u00a0Vanity Fair<\/em>‘s September cover story<\/a> on her\u00a0revealed that Williams would be married by the time the article\u00a0was published in July<\/em>.<\/p>\n

But not to the finance guy. To Elverum, the indie musician\u00a0who performs as The Microphone and\u00a0Mount Eerie. Because, surprise<\/a>. They swapped vows in the Adirondacks in what was obviously a very private ceremony.<\/p>\n

“I don’t really want to talk about any of it,” Williams told VF<\/em>. “But there’s that tease, that lure, that’s like, What if this helps somebody? What if somebody who has always journeyed in this way, who has struggled as much as I struggled, and looked as much as I looked, finds something that helps them?”<\/p>\n

Like Williams, who’s been raising daughter Matilda, now 13, on her own since the death of her ex-partner Heath Ledger in 2008, Elverum is a single parent\u2014and he too knows from tragedy. He lost his wife of 13 years to cancer in 2016\u00a0when their daughter, Agathe, was 18 months old.<\/p>\n

So really, it’s kind of a miracle that these two found each other.<\/p>\n

“I never gave up on love,” Williams said. She added, “Obviously I’ve never once in my life talked about a relationship, but Phil isn’t anyone else. And that’s worth something. Ultimately the way he loves me is the way I want to live my life on the whole. I work to be free inside of the moment. I parent to let Matilda feel free to be herself, and I am finally loved by someone who makes me feel free.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We defy anyone who says they expected these two to actually get married\u2014anytime soon, at least\u2014after Bieber popped the question while they were vacationing in the Bahamas in July, just weeks after their on-again, off-again relationship looked to be back on in the form of an actual boyfriend-girlfriend arrangement. (Not to mention this was just months after Bieber and Selena Gomez<\/strong> appeared to be giving\u00a0love a shot again<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

“Justin made arrangements for the ring when they were in NYC and knew that he wanted to propose to her,” a source explained. “It was a sudden decision but Justin always knew Hailey and him had a special bond that was incomparable.”<\/p>\n

OK, fine, so they were engaged. But whoa, baby,\u00a0the young couple\u00a0could-not-would-not wait. They were endlessly cagey about it, but the pair swapped vows in a no-frills ceremony<\/a> at\u00a0the marriage bureau in a New York courthouse on Sept. 13. There may be frills in their future, so that all the Baldwins and Biebers can partake in the celebration, but so far Hailey has filed to trademark her married name<\/a>\u00a0and changed her appellation to Hailey Bieber on Instagram<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“My wife is awesome,” the Biebs informed his Instagram followers<\/a> in October.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

They started dating in 2017\u00a0and supposedly got engaged in January, but were in no rush to start wedding planning… until they were.<\/p>\n

Planner to the stars Mindy Weiss<\/strong> whipped their big day into shape\u00a0in 48 hours, in time for a special Sept. 8 ceremony on the beach in Malibu. The bride wore a lacy white romper, perfect for leaving the party on the back of her husband’s motorcycle.<\/p>\n

“I love her,” Phypers told reporters at the premiere of his wife’s movie The Toybox<\/em>. “She’s amazing. A dream come true.”<\/p>\n

And actually, “September 8th meant a lot to my husband,” Richards told\u00a0ExtraTV<\/a>. “Means infinity, the number 8, and we just said, ‘you know what, let’s just do it.’ We threw it together and it was fun that we didn’t have to make certain decisions and make it about that instead of the hoopla of a wedding.”<\/p>\n

She added to\u00a0ET<\/em><\/a>, “Yeah, we didn’t tell a lot of people. We kept it really private and we had talked about it for quite some time.”<\/p>\n

Among the people they shared their plan with: Bravo. Denise and Aaron’s nuptials will be a part of the next season of\u00a0The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It only took three months<\/a> for these two krazy kids to tie the knot. Well, six years and three months.<\/p>\n

But once the entrepreneur had asked the supermodel to marry him over the summer, the\u00a0super-private couple wasted no time in planning a top-secret ceremony<\/a>, attended by their nearest and dearest, in upstate New York in October, on a Thursday (though there may be a bigger soiree\u00a0in the\u00a0spring). Even the honeymoon was compact, as befitting their busy schedules\u2014a 48-hour “mini-moon” to an undisclosed piece of paradise.<\/p>\n

“They took our phones. It was like that,” wedding guest Ashley Graham<\/strong> divulged to\u00a0People<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0“And I actually kind of love that idea. I think if I were to get married again I would totally do the take the phone and confiscate it thing.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

These two were not meant to be, but for a\u00a0heady four months, they certainly thought they were. Davidson started ring shopping in May<\/a>, barely two weeks after he and Grande first went public as not even a couple, but as two people who were having a great time together and dating casually. By the beginning of June, they were engaged.<\/p>\n

“I just think some people are meant to be together and some people aren’t,” Davidson explained to Howard Stern in September. “Even if they’re good people or not, some people just aren’t good in relationships together, and I just think we’re supposed to be together.”<\/p>\n

Grande told Paper\u00a0<\/em>magazine, “All I know is that I’m happy with Pete, that’s all I really care about.”<\/p>\n

By mid-October, however, the ring was back in Davidson’s possession.\u00a0Grande “will always have a special place in her heart for him, but told him that right now is not the best time,” a source said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Did you hear, Nick and Priyanka got married! In a still unfinished onslaught of celebration, the “Jealous” singer and the\u00a0Quantico\u00a0<\/em>star wed in India on Dec. 1…and on Dec. 2…and then had\u00a0their first reception<\/a>…and there’s reportedly a Los Angeles blowout to come.<\/p>\n

“People will need vacations after this wedding,” Chopra joked to\u00a0Vogue<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The planning took twice as long\u2014four months\u2014as it took for Nick to get down on one knee after he and the former Miss World started seriously dating. Actually, that’s not even the case. Though he didn’t place the Tiffany ring on her finger until July<\/a>, while they were in Greece, he actually bent the knee the first time he ever saw her in person, more than a year beforehand.<\/p>\n

They first met virtually when Nick DM’d Priyanka on Sept. 8, 2016, informing her that they had mutual friends who thought they should meet. They started texting and then, when he finally spied her at the 2017 Vanity Fair<\/em> Oscar party almost six months later, “…I put my drink down, get on one knee\u2014this is in front of a\u00a0bunch<\/em>\u00a0of people\u2014and I say, ‘You’re real. Where have you been all my life?’ Like,\u00a0loud<\/em>,” Jonas told\u00a0Vogue<\/em>.<\/p>\n

They\u00a0spent\u00a0more than a year getting to know each other, but primarily long distance. In fact, they didn’t see each other in person at all<\/em> between the Met Gala in 2017 and the one in 2018.\u00a0Happily, once they were in the same city for more than a hot second, they just knew. Nick told his mom he was going to marry Priyanka after their third date, a Dodgers game.<\/p>\n

When she at first met his proposal with silence, Nick went ahead and said after 45 seconds, “I’m going to put this ring on your finger now unless you have any objections.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Overall, the appeal of an elopement or otherwise very private, small wedding is pretty obvious if you’re famous\u2014no one knows about it till after the I-dos. But the\u00a0theme that seems to apply to most of these couples, if not Nick and Priyanka’s traditional-meets-modern-meets-intimate-meets-blowout extravaganza, is that\u00a0the brides and grooms enjoyed not having to make endless decisions and then wonder if everybody else<\/em> was enjoying themselves.<\/p>\n

But big or small, in the afternoon or over the course of a week, a wedding that\u00a0happens in the heat of the moment can’t help but\u00a0leave plenty of warm\u00a0feelings in its wake.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
