An old video of Chris Rock<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0Louis C.K.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and Ricky Gervais<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0dropping the N-word while discussing the notion of making jokes with it,\u00a0in front of an uncomfortable-looking\u00a0Jerry Seinfeld<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0has resurfaced, gone viral and stirred controversy.<\/p>\n

The comedians have not commented on the footage, taken from the 2011 HBO special Talking Funny<\/a><\/em>. Many people voiced outrage about it on Twitter over the weekend.<\/p>\n

“When white people are rich, they’re just rich, forever and ever. Even their kids are rich,”\u00a0Louis\u00a0tells\u00a0Gervais, Rock and Seinfeld. “But when a black guy gets rich, it’s countdown to when he’s poor again.”<\/p>\n

“He’s the blackest white guy I f–king know,” Rock says. “And then all the negative things we think about black people, this f–ker-“<\/p>\n

“You’re saying I’m a n—-r,” Louis says, cutting off the comedian, a longtime friend and colleague\u2014Louis was a writer on his series\u00a0The Chris Rock Show<\/em>\u00a0in the late ’90s.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

“Yes, you are the n—-rest f–king white man I have ever-” Rock says, spurring Gervais to burst out laughing and exclaim, “Amazing!”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Seinfeld, the most successful comedian in the world who is known not only for Seinfeld<\/em> but also\u00a0for his overall clean, observational standup comedy, did not look amused.<\/p>\n

“I don’t think he could do that,” he said, dryly. “I don’t think he has those qualities.”<\/p>\n

“I wouldn’t use [that word] anywhere,” he adds.<\/p>\n

“We say ‘n—-r’ on stage,” Louis says, referring to himself and Rock. “You guys don’t.”<\/p>\n

“That’s the difference between…we compare them in different ways but that’s definitely a pairing,” Gervais says. “Who says ‘n—-r’ on stage? We don’t.”<\/p>\n

“Well you just did,” Seinfeld replies.<\/p>\n

Rock adds, “I’ve given it up, just ’cause it’s played.”<\/p>\n

“I don’t think you’ve ever said it, probably, in your life,” Louis tells Seinfeld.<\/p>\n

“No, never,” he replies. “You’ve found the humor of it. I haven’t found it, nor do I seek it.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

It\u2019s quite clear that even if Chris Rock wasn\u2019t born, Gervais and Louis CK were going to be using the n-word. Black people never have and never will give white folks \u270c?permission\u270c?to call us that. That\u2019s the jig. The HBO footage resurfaced six years before Louis’ career largely derailed after he admitted to engaging in sexual misconduct<\/a>, when he was among the most popular comedians.\u00a0He and the other three comics are among the most famous of all time.<\/p>\n

Over the last\u00a0few years, amid a changing political climate and growing popularity of social media, people have increasingly called out others, including celebs, publicly over\u00a0offensive comments, especially those targeting minorities.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Let me get this straight. Folks – especially a lot of Black folks _ are angry and outraged to see @chrisrock<\/a> say it\u2019s OK for Louis CK, a white man, to use the N-word, but they got no issues hearing Black folks say it to one another, AND will laugh when Chris says it on stage. WTF<\/p>\n

Others have rushed to defend what they say is free speech, condemning what they call “social justice warriors.” Several people\u00a0expressed confusion over the renewed controversy over Rock, Louis and Gervais’ comments.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

While audiences have tended to be more lenient towards standup comedians, the line gets blurred more as they cement their popularity onscreen.\u00a0Recently, comedian\u00a0Kevin Hart<\/a><\/strong>, one of the most successful comics and actors,\u00a0stepped down as host of the\u00a02019 Oscars<\/strong>\u00a0following backlash over his past anti-gay tweets<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Seinfeld’s\u00a0Seinfeld<\/em> co-star\u00a0Michael Richards<\/strong>‘ career never rebounded after he famously called a\u00a0heckler the N-word onstage at the Laugh Factory in\u00a0Hollywood in 2007. He later apologized. Months later, Seinfeld signaled on\u00a0Larry King Live<\/em> that Richards was not a racist, saying, “I think it was just a temper thing.”<\/p>\n

While Seinfeld’s comedy is notoriously family-friendly, he has\u00a0spoken out against political correctness and has declared\u00a0that he won’t perform at colleges, popular venues for comics, because he hears students are too “PC.”<\/p>\n

“They just want to use these words: ‘That’s racist;’ ‘That’s sexist;’ ‘That’s prejudice,'” Seinfeld said on ESPN in 2015.\u00a0“They don’t even know what the f–k they’re talking about.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
