How come\u00a0<\/strong>Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/strong> gets to dance? If she\u00a0dances, we’ll all dance…It’ll be anarchy!<\/p>\n

A day before the 29-year-old Democratic congresswoman took office, an online troll recently posted on Twitter an almost nine-year-old\u00a0video of her dancing\u00a0with friends on a rooftop.\u00a0Whaaaat? The horror!<\/p>\n

The person tweeted,\u00a0“Here is America’s favorite commie know-it-all acting like the clueless nitwit she is…High School video of ‘Sandy’ Ocasio-Cortez.”<\/p>\n

The\u00a0clip, which naturally went viral, is part of a longer video that was filmed at Boston University while she was a student. It shows\u00a0the liberal politician,\u00a0the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, and\u00a0her peers\u00a0imitating dance scenes from popular ’80s films, such as The Breakfast Club<\/em>. It was actually a meme, inspired by a 2009 fan-made YouTube video that mashes up scenes from Brat Pack movies.<\/p>\n

But their attempt to embarrass and shame Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0backfired and the troll later deleted their account following much mockery online.<\/p>\n

“Now she’s totally done for,”\u00a0tweeted<\/a> Washington Post<\/em> political columnist\u00a0Karen Tumulty<\/strong>. “Newly unearthed video reveals that when @AOC was in college, she was … adorable.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

“Anyone who thinks video of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dancing as a teen will derail her political career will be devastated by video of [President Donald] Trump<\/strong> speaking as an adult,” tweeted<\/a> comedian and writer Joseph Scrimshaw<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Ocasio-Cortez herself tweeted<\/a> on Friday a video of her dancing to\u00a0Edwin Starr<\/strong>‘s 1970 hit\u00a0“War (What Is It Good for).”<\/p>\n

“I hear the GOP thinks women dancing are scandalous,” she wrote. “Wait till they find out Congresswomen dance too! Have a great weekend everyone :)”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

She also told The Hill<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0“It is not normal for elected officials to have a reputation for dancing well and I’m happy to be one. It is unsurprising to me that Republicans would think having fun should be disqualifying or illegal.”<\/p>\n

Boston University first shared the video<\/a> in 2010. A year later, Ocasio-Cortez graduated from the college, where she had majored in economics and international relations.<\/p>\n
