Is this just fantasy?<\/p>\n<p>A year after a\u00a0certain air of solemnity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/904432\/how-the-time-s-up-movement-made-itself-heard-at-the-2018-golden-globes\" target=\"_blank\">understandably held court<\/a> at what is generally considered the most raucous night of awards season, lightheartedness was once again on tap\u2014and as presided over by co-hosts\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/sandra_oh\">Sandra Oh<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/andy_samberg\">Andy Samberg<\/a><\/strong> on Sunday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/2019_golden_globes\" target=\"_blank\">2019 Golden Globes<\/a>\u00a0were\u00a0extra congenial.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out, all those good vibes provided what turned out to be a much-needed soft landing for all of the awards-season rattling bombshells, as it would appear that the Globes are no longer trying to be\u00a0harbingers of subsequent Oscar night glory.\u00a0Instead, they muddied the waters quite a bit, honoring a film that didn&#8217;t even get great reviews\u2014but which has a best ensemble nomination at the SAG Awards, so anything is possible\u2014with the biggest prize.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"65.338326446281\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"24.199380165289\">\n<p>1.\u00a0<strong>A Different Star Is Born:\u00a0<\/strong>It&#8217;s ironic that the quintessential Hollywood tale didn&#8217;t register with the Hollywood Foreign Press. We&#8217;re actually not far from the &#8220;Shallow&#8221; now. In fact, the &#8220;Shallow&#8221; is where we are, with Best Original Song being\u00a0the only win of the night for\u00a0<em>A Star Is Born<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No one was expecting a clean sweep, per se, not with <strong>Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n\u00a0<\/strong>once again being considered a lock for directing for\u00a0<em>Roma<\/em>. And any way the wind blows doesn&#8217;t really matter to me, but it was a right shock to\u00a0hear\u00a0<em>Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em> named Best Motion Picture, Drama, last night instead of&#8230;any of the other movies. But especially\u00a0<em>A Star Is Born<\/em>,\u00a0which\u00a0went 1-for-5.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to envision the Academy doubling down on this choice for Best Picture, but <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/rami_malek\">Rami Malek<\/a><\/strong>, whose performance as the late, great and enigmatic <strong>Freddie Mercury<\/strong> was deservedly singled out for high praise in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/983889\/everything-bohemian-rhapsody-got-wrong-about-freddie-mercury-s-life\" target=\"_blank\">every middling review<\/a> of\u00a0the film,\u00a0just got this much closer to winning an Oscar.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"38.250559284116\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"21.199105145414\">\n<p><strong>2. The Dark Arts:\u00a0<\/strong>God has gotten his fair share of thanks at award shows over the years\u2014though, at the Oscars at least,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/steven_spielberg\">Steven Spielberg<\/a><\/strong>is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/oscars-steven-spielberg-is-thanked-775639\" target=\"_blank\">way ahead<\/a> in mentions. Presumably brand new to the list, however\u2014and we really should start counting\u2014is Satan, whom <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/christian_bale\">Christian Bale<\/a><\/strong> heartily thanked for the inspiration\u00a0behind his performance as former U.S. Vice President <strong>Dick Cheney<\/strong> in\u00a0<em>Vice<\/em>. The Welsh actor once again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1000366\/the-wild-history-of-christian-bale-s-drastic-movie-transformations\" target=\"_blank\">rendered himself unrecognizable<\/a> and, not surprisingly, walked away with the Globe for best lead actor in a motion picture, comedy or musical.<\/p>\n<p>Director <strong>Adam McKay<\/strong>\u00a0said,\u00a0&#8220;&#8216;I&#8217;ve got to find somebody who can be absolutely charisma-free and reviled by everybody&#8217;&#8230;Thank you for all the competition, I will be cornering the market on charisma-free a&#8211;holes,&#8221; promised Bale, looking like himself again. &#8220;What do you think, <strong>Mitch McConnell<\/strong> next? That could be good, couldn&#8217;t it?&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-5\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"60.870967741935\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"15.459293394777\">\n<p>He also started his speech by jocularly announcing, &#8220;What a bunch of lucky buggers we are, to make a life out of doing something that we love,&#8221; and referred to his kids as &#8220;banana and burrito,&#8221; so&#8230; we&#8217;re not sure how he&#8217;s going to top this should he win the Oscar.<\/p>\n<p>Same goes for the\u00a0winner for\u00a0lead actress in a comedy\/musical, revered British thespian\u00a0<strong>Olivia Colman<\/strong> (whom we&#8217;ll be seeing more of at the Emmys and Globes, because she&#8217;s the new Queen Elizabeth II in\u00a0<em>The Crown<\/em>), who referred to co-stars <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/emma_stone\">Emma Stone<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/rachel_weisz\">Rachel Weisz<\/a><\/strong> as &#8220;my bitches&#8221; in a nod to their conniving-to-the-core characters in\u00a0<em>The Favourite<\/em> opposite Colman&#8217;s Queen Anne.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-6\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"37\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"14\">\n<p><strong>3. You&#8217;re Killing It, Eve:<\/strong> Sandra Oh didn&#8217;t need to fake\u00a0any pep as the second\u00a0half of the show got under way. The former\u00a0<em>Grey&#8217;s Anatomy<\/em> star\u00a0and\u00a02019\u00a0co-host won for\u00a0best lead actress in a TV drama for her\u00a0layered portrayal of an MI-5 security operative who ends up wanting to both\u00a0capture\u00a0<em>and<\/em> get to know the\u00a0female assassin she&#8217;s tracking in BBC America&#8217;s gripping but at times kinda hilarious\u00a0<em>Killing Eve<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>At the top of the evening Oh had landed one of the best monologue jokes, a wordless imitation of an unimpressed Asian mom\u00a0reacting to the success of\u00a0<em>Crazy Rich Asians<\/em>. Oh&#8217;s mother and her darling dad were all smiles, though, when they saw\u00a0their daughter make history as the first Asian actress to win a Globe for lead acting in a drama series.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-7\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"40\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"20\">\n<p><strong>4. Stark Difference<\/strong><strong>:\u00a0<\/strong>Almost six years after the Red Wedding decimated House Stark, <strong>Richard Madden<\/strong>\u00a0had a much better night at the Golden Globes, winning best lead actor in a drama series for his dreamy but tense, taut and thrilling performance in the BBC&#8217;s mega-hit\u00a0<em>Bodyguard<\/em>, which came to the U.S. via Netflix.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thank you very much. I didn&#8217;t see this coming at all,&#8221; the Scottish actor said humbly, truly looking surprised. He capped off his thank you list with &#8220;most importantly, my friends and my family, and mum and dad who flew all the way from Scotland, wouldn&#8217;t be here without you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And so House Madden raises its flag in triumph.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-8\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"32.671875\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"7.6875\">\n<p><strong>5. Method Acting:\u00a0<\/strong>Perhaps the edginess of the work of every other show in the category canceled\u00a0itself out,\u00a0so the old-school humor of\u00a0<em>The Kominsky Method<\/em> won for Best Comedy Series. Then again, the HFPA also really loves them some <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/michael_douglas\">Michael Douglas<\/a><\/strong>. His win for lead actor in a comedy series was his fourth Globe,\u00a0including a Cecil B. DeMille\u00a0Award for life achievement\u00a0in 2004.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-10\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"64.5269286754\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"19.854439592431\">\n<p>However much <em>The Good Place<\/em> or\u00a0<em>Barry<\/em> may have deserved to win, it\u00a0was rather sweet to see series creator\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/chuck\">Chuck<\/a><\/strong> <strong>Lorre<\/strong>\u2014no stranger to hit shows but a little less acquainted with critical acclaim\u2014get emotional. &#8220;This doesn&#8217;t happen to me,&#8221; he said.\u00a0&#8220;No one&#8217;s cryin&#8217; for me [and his millions], but this is spectacular.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And\u00a0if you don&#8217;t go with a veteran star like Douglas, you don&#8217;t get lines like, &#8220;I guess this has to go to my 102-year-old father, Kirk\u2014alter kockers rule!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0usually\u00a0preferring to award brand-new shows (see all of the above), the Globes made up for lost time and named\u00a0<em>The Americans<\/em>\u00a0best TV drama after its final season. A big <em>da\u00a0<\/em>to that choice.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-11\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"39.326788218794\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"19.663394109397\">\n<p><strong>6. Queen King: Regina King<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0long-deserved Moment appears to have entered its cinematic period, with the three-time Emmy winner&#8217;s win for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for\u00a0<em>If Beale Street Could Talk\u00a0<\/em>further making the SAG Awards snub a head-scratcher and simultaneously helping her Oscar chances.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is so fantastic,&#8221; she marveled onstage, and proceeded to vow to use her platform to employ\u00a0at least a 50-percent female staff on\u00a0every project she produces for the next two years. &#8220;Time&#8217;s Up times two,&#8221;\u00a0King said. &#8220;&#8230;We understand that our microphones are big and we are speaking for everyone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Regina, we&#8217;re available,&#8221; <strong>Megan Mullally<\/strong>, coming on after to present with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/kristen_bell\">Kristen Bell<\/a><\/strong>, said.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-12\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"42.017045454545\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"24.715909090909\">\n<p><strong>7. Close for Comfort:\u00a0<\/strong>There&#8217;s been a lot of talk this year about whether <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/glenn_close\">Glenn Close<\/a><\/strong>is going to get the finally-it&#8217;s-her-turn Oscar for\u00a0<em>The Wife<\/em>, but no one looked more surprised than the 14-time Golden Globe nominee to hear her name called last night. It was her third Globe win, but first for a film.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was called\u00a0<em>The Wife\u2014<\/em>I think that&#8217;s why it took 14 years to get made,&#8221; she quipped. But taking the baton from King&#8217;s speech earlier in the night, Close also made a point of stressing the importance of empowering women\u00a0to go after what they want.<\/p>\n<p>She paid tribute to her mother, who in her 80s &#8220;said to me, &#8216;I feel I haven&#8217;t accomplished anything,'&#8221; Close recalled. &#8220;And it was so not right. And I feel what I&#8217;ve learned through this whole experience,\u00a0you know, women, we&#8217;re nurturers, that&#8217;s what&#8217;s expected of us&#8230;But we have to find personal fulfillment. We have to follow our dreams.
