Sure, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/prince_william\">Prince William<\/a><\/strong> was great, <strong>Queen Elizabeth II<\/strong> had her devoted disciples and people were always going to be interested in what <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/prince_harry\">Prince Harry<\/a><\/strong> was getting up to, particularly if that involved squiring\u00a0around a new prospective princess. But in terms of undisputed star power, no one garnered more notice than Kate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Duchess of Cambridge upstaged her Duke at nearly every photo op and pretty much all royal news could be boiled down to one of three categories: Who designed Kate&#8217;s look\u2014and is it an outfit she&#8217;s recycled from before? Is she testing out a new hairstyle\u2014could bangs be next? And, wait, could that possibly be the hint of a baby bump?!<\/p>\n<p>Then a funny thing happened. Harry decided to settle down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Every bit as charismatic as Kate, and media trained to boot, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/meghan_markle\">Meghan Markle<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0was poised and warm, had a slew of causes she was\u00a0already passionate about\u00a0and was a shiny new\u00a0character sending royal watchers aflutter.\u00a0That her official coming out party\u2014her and Harry&#8217;s breathlessly viewed May nuptials\u2014coincided with Kate&#8217;s six-month maternity leave following the April arrival of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/prince_louis\">Prince Louis<\/a><\/strong> only made Meghan&#8217;s star shine brighter and soon it became easy to forget that there was another princess bride with a perfectly bouncy blowout and a knack for\u00a0pairing designer fashions with affordable wares.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"54.002200220022\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"15.188118811881\">\n<p>That all changed Oct. 23. At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/979851\/kate-middleton-wears-princess-diana-s-tiara-to-state-dinner-at-buckingham-palace\" target=\"_blank\">her\u00a0sixth official event back<\/a>, a state dinner in honor of the Netherlands <strong>King Willem-Alexander<\/strong> and <strong>Queen Maxima<\/strong>, Kate topped her\u00a0ice blue Alexander McQueen gown with the\u00a0diamond-and-pearl <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/983232\/crown-jewel-intrigue-kate-middleton-meghan-markle-diana-camilla-and-the-epic-tale-of-royal-tiaras\" target=\"_blank\">Lover&#8217;s Knot\u00a0tiara<\/a> (a favorite of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/princess_diana\">Princess Diana<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s) and the Royal Family Order brooch, reminding everyone\u00a0she was the original style queen.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not so much that there&#8217;s any sort of inherent competition between the two duchesses. Despite what fun it is to speculate otherwise, insiders swear they&#8217;re each happy to\u00a0cede center stage\u00a0at any one given time. And they&#8217;ve made it a point to share the spotlight in recent weeks as rumors of their alleged feud reached a crescendo that even the palace couldn&#8217;t ignore, smiling side-by-side at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/prince_charles\">Prince Charles<\/a><\/strong>&#8216; 70th <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/987451\/meghan-markle-and-kate-middleton-go-glam-for-prince-charles-star-studded-70th-birthday-bash\" target=\"_blank\">birthday celebration<\/a>, November&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/988260\/meghan-markle-and-kate-middleton-enjoy-double-date-with-prince-harry-and-prince-william\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Foundation Dinner<\/a> and, of course, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/999192\/meghan-markle-and-kate-middleton-share-a-smile-during-christmas-outing-with-royals\" target=\"_blank\">Christmas Day services<\/a> at St. Mary Magdalene Church.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"36.973415132924\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"18.486707566462\">\n<p>But\u00a0for all of her seemingly shy tendencies,\u00a0Kate, who marks her 37th birthday today, isn&#8217;t content to fade into the background. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/995252\/kate-middleton-is-pretty-in-polka-dots-for-new-children-s-hospital-role\" target=\"_blank\">newly named patron<\/a> of Evelina London Children&#8217;s Hospital is deeply committed to moving the needle on pet causes such as\u00a0mental health, underprivileged youth and the importance of the arts\u00a0and she&#8217;s fully aware that her influence is only set to grow as William inches close to the throne. &#8220;A couple of years ago, you might have seen her being a little bit timid,&#8221; Susan E. Kelley, owner and editor of the fashion cataloguing site <a href=\"https:\/\/whatkatewore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>What Kate Wore<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/style\/2018\/10\/kate-middleton-comeback\" target=\"_blank\">opined to <em>Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;Now, she seems like she&#8217;s in a more take-charge position. And much like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/videos\/278363\/meghan-markle-causes-a-stir-by-closing-her-own-car-door\" target=\"_blank\">Meghan had done<\/a> days earlier, she closed her own car door on the way in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A week\u00a0later, the former art history major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/975118\/kate-middleton-and-prince-william-playfully-paint-at-mental-health-summit\" target=\"_blank\">confidently added her brush stroke<\/a> to\u00a0<strong>Dairo Vargas<\/strong>&#8216; &#8220;Someone To Turn To&#8221; painting\u00a0at the inaugural Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit, joking he was &#8220;very brave&#8221; to allow her and William to contribute.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And while it was Meghan&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/976757\/here-s-why-the-internet-is-convinced-meghan-markle-is-pregnant\" target=\"_blank\">suspiciously voluminous<\/a> Givenchy coat that pulled focus at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/princess_eugenie\">Princess Eugenie<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s Oct.\u00a012 wedding, the normally PDA-shy Kate (in McQueen, the same label she wore for her own vows) drew notice for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/976539\/prince-william-and-kate-middleton-show-rare-pda-at-princess-eugenie-s-wedding\" target=\"_blank\">brazenly resting her hand<\/a> on William&#8217;s upper thigh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-5\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"42.645833333333\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2018923\/rs_634x1024-181023144212-634-kate-middleton-crown.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Kate Middleton\" alt=\"Kate Middleton\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">John Stillwell\/PA Wire<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"27.76983503535\">\n<p>And if those actions didn&#8217;t appropriately convey that she\u00a0had returned to\u00a0duty, her statement-making ensemble at the Buckingham Palace state dinner got the point across quite nicely. In addition to the tiara, first crafted in 1914 for <strong>Queen Mary<\/strong>,\u00a0she draped herself in <strong>Queen Alexandra<\/strong>&#8216;s pearl-and-diamond wedding necklace and\u00a0a diamond-encrusted brooch featuring a painting of the Queen, and gifted to\u00a0Kate by the monarch herself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The greatest honor bestowed upon a female family member, the Royal Family Order was presented\u00a0to Kate last year. &#8220;Catherine is enormously proud to be have been given the brooch,&#8221; a family friend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/style\/2018\/10\/kate-middleton-royal-family-order\" target=\"_blank\">told <em>Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;She waited a long time for it, and I think she was very keen to be photographed in it. It&#8217;s a badge of honor as far as she is concerned and she&#8217;s absolutely thrilled.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So you could say she put a bit of thought into\u00a0the ensemble. &#8220;After that long break, she has certainly come back with a bang,&#8221;\u00a0Kaitlin Menza, co-host of the <em>Royally Obsessed<\/em> podcast asserted. &#8220;I think that&#8217;s what she&#8217;s trying to convey: &#8216;I&#8217;m back, baby.'&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And here to stay, her ensemble for December&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/993276\/kate-middleton-dazzles-in-lover-s-knot-tiara-at-buckingham-palace-diplomatic-reception\" target=\"_blank\">Buckingham Palace diplomatic reception<\/a> also featuring the Lover&#8217;s Knot tiara and Royal Family Order pinned to a glittering Jenny Packham gown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-7\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"64.754402224282\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"25.523632993513\">\n<p>Though, in the hearts of those who follow her, she never truly left. For all the news about pieces from Meghan&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/977650\/meghan-markle-brings-maternity-fashion-on-her-royal-tour-see-her-latest-look\" target=\"_blank\">Commonwealth tour<\/a> selling out left and right, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/style\/2018\/10\/kate-middleton-fashion-influence#~o\" target=\"_blank\">Brand Finance&#8217;s British Luxury 2018 survey<\/a>, Kate is still the royal deemed most likely to convince U.S. shoppers to buy items by U.K. brands and the most liked U.K. icon, coming in three places above Meghan, 37.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although Meghan has now joined the Firm\u2014and temporarily taken the spotlight away from Kate\u2014I don&#8217;t think she will ever eclipse her,&#8221; Claudia Joseph, author of <em>How to Dress Like a Princess<\/em>, told <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>. &#8220;There is a lot of affection for Kate both as a mother to three gorgeous children and a future Queen.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course she intends to make statements that extend beyond fashion. Having fully grown into her senior position in the Firm after seven years, three heirs and too many walkabouts and t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eates with the Queen to count, she&#8217;s passed off her commoner-finding-her-way-amongst-the-blue-bloods crown to Meghan, who&#8217;s just starting her journey\u2014and her family\u2014with Harry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-8\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"37.824561403509\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"16.701754385965\">\n<p>&#8220;She found her role as a working member of the royal family through bringing up her own children and realizing what&#8217;s important to her,&#8221; ABC News royal commentator Omid Scobie told <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>. &#8220;One of the things that we&#8217;ll see her really focusing on for the months ahead is working to help support disadvantaged children in the U.K&#8230;.Kate has this plan in place to really work with a number of organizations, including the Royal Foundation.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the past the daughter of\u00a0former flight attendants has been labeled with the reputation of a somewhat reluctant royal, with some never shaking the image of the newly engaged University of St. Andrews grad\u00a0confessing to\u00a0ITV News&#8217;\u00a0Tom Bradby that she was a bit apprehensive about the role she was taking on. &#8220;It&#8217;s obviously nerve-wracking, because I don&#8217;t know what I&#8217;m sort of&#8230;I don&#8217;t know the ropes,&#8221; she admitted in <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Entertainment\/prince-william-kate-middleton-interview-transcript\/story?id=12163826\" target=\"_blank\">the 2010 interview<\/a>, the first time much of the world heard her voice. &#8220;William is obviously used to it, but no I&#8217;m willing to learn quickly and work hard.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-9\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"42.5\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"25\">\n<p>She&#8217;s done both quite admirably. To hear insiders tell it, Kate&#8217;s\u00a0soft-spoken demeanor, modest hemlines and ever present pantyhose belie her true personality. Behind the scenes, those in the know insist, she&#8217;s a true force of change. &#8220;The Duchess of Cambridge has been labeled work-shy in the past,&#8221;\u00a0says\u00a0<em>Vanity Fair<\/em>&#8216;s royal correspondent Katie Nicholl. &#8220;But, actually, she&#8217;s taken on just a few patronages, things where she&#8217;s really made a difference. Early intervention with young children in primary schools, putting mental health on the map with Heads Together, was her idea. She&#8217;s been very instrumental.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And incredibly effective.\u00a0Lorraine Heggessey, CEO of the Royal Foundation, revealed to <em>People<\/em> it was Kate that suggested they team up to direct their focus towards eradicating the stigma that&#8217;s long been attached to mental illnesses. &#8220;I have found her to be incredibly wise,&#8221; she told the mag, noting that while she&#8217;s not the type &#8220;who pushes herself forward, she is very confident in her views. While Kate\u00a0admittedly doesn&#8217;t have a ton in her common with her new sister-in-law, any supposed rivalry is the hopeful invention of eager tabloid editors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People who are often saying, &#8216;Well, is she jealous of Meghan?&#8217; She&#8217;s really not,&#8221;\u00a0asserts Nicholl. &#8220;Kate is happier in her life now that she ever has been. She has everything she wants. She has William, she has three beautiful children&#8230;she is where she always wanted to be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it&#8217;s true that Kate is saddled with certain expectation Meghan is exempt from. A presumptive queen consort who has the somewhat Herculean task of raising another future king, she&#8217;s expected to toe the line in her\u00a0sensible L.K. Bennett heels while Meghan, the wife of the so-called &#8220;spare heir&#8221; is somewhat more free to subtly share her viewpoints on more hot button issues, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/916975\/meghan-markle-shuts-down-this-major-misconception-about-women-s-empowerment\" target=\"_blank\">referencing the #MeToo movement<\/a> in her speech at the first annual Royal Foundation forum, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/937749\/meghan-markle-says-she-s-proud-to-be-a-feminist-in-official-royal-biography\" target=\"_blank\">labeling herself a feminist<\/a> on her official\u00a0royal family bio and proudly turning her Windsor Castle vows into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/937127\/how-meghan-markle-americanized-the-royal-wedding-the-songs-the-cake-and-all-those-celebrity-guests\" target=\"_blank\">a cross-cultural celebration<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite their differences, the pair have every reason to continue working together. &#8220;If they&#8217;re clever, both of them, they will make sure this is a relationship that works,&#8221; says Nicholl. &#8220;They could and should be great allies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-12\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"64.229090909091\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"24.558181818182\">\n<p>Kate has already done her part, acting as a steadying force for Meghan as she adjusted to her new life,\u00a0extending an open invitation to drop by her Kensington Palace apartment\u00a0if she ever\u00a0had questions about what lie ahead. &#8220;Since very early on she made it clear that should Meghan ever need something, or just want to chat, she shouldn&#8217;t hesitate to get in touch,&#8221; an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/910236\/countdown-to-the-royal-wedding-inside-meghan-markle-and-kate-middleton-s-special-friendship\" target=\"_blank\">insider told E!
