Yorgos Lanthimos<\/strong>‘ The Favourite<\/em> lived up to its title when the 2019 BAFTA Film Awards<\/strong> nominations<\/a> were announced earlier today, receiving recognition in a whopping 12 categories. The drama, starring Olivia Colman<\/strong>, Emma Stone<\/a><\/strong> and Rachel Weisz<\/a><\/strong>, is proving to be a strong award season contender across the board\u2014especially after Colman’s 2019 Golden Globes<\/a><\/strong> win<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Colman is nominated in the Leading Actress category with The Wife<\/em>‘s Glenn Close<\/a><\/strong>, A Star Is Born<\/em>‘s Lady Gaga<\/a><\/strong>, Can You Ever Forgive Me?<\/em>‘s Melissa McCarthy<\/a><\/strong> and Widows<\/em>‘ Viola Davis<\/a><\/strong>. To some, Davis’ inclusion came as a surprise, considering Steve McQueen<\/strong>‘s heist movie has been largely overlooked by other award shows and no one else from the cast or crew was honored.<\/p>\n

Also shocking? Emily Blunt<\/a><\/strong>, who earned raves for her role as Great Britain’s beloved no-nonsense nanny in Mary Poppins Returns<\/em>, was shut out of the Leading Actress category. Walt Disney Pictures’ musical itself received a mere three nominations: Costume Design (Sandy Powell<\/strong>), Original Music (Marc Shaiman<\/strong>) and Production Design (John Myhre<\/strong> and Gordon Sim<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

McCarthy’s Can You Ever Forgive Me?<\/em> co-star Richard E. Grant<\/strong> received his first-ever BAFTA nomination; the 61-year-old veteran will face off against Green Book<\/em>‘s Mahershala A<\/strong>li, Beautiful Boy<\/em>‘s Timoth\u00e9e<\/strong> Chalamet<\/strong>, BlackkKlansman<\/em>‘s Adam Driver<\/a><\/strong> and Vice<\/em>‘s Sam Rockwell<\/a><\/strong> in the Supporting Actor field. And although BlackkKlansman<\/em> director Spike Lee<\/a><\/strong> received BAFTA’s Special Award in 2002, his three nominations this year\u2014for Best Director, Best Film and Adapted Screenplay\u2014mark the first time he’s ever been nominated in a competitive category.<\/p>\n

Black Panther<\/em>, which will likely get a Best Picture nomination at the 2019 Oscars<\/a><\/strong>, failed to get any love from the top categories. Instead, it was recognized in a single category: Visual Effects.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Director Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n<\/strong> has a whopping six nominations for ROMA<\/em>, making him the most-nominated individual in a single year. A Star Is Born<\/em>‘s Bradley Cooper<\/a><\/strong>, meanwhile, makes history as the first man to be nominated as an actor, composer, director, producer and writer.<\/p>\n

Michael Pearce’s Beast<\/em>, starring Jessie Buckley<\/strong> and Johnny Flynn<\/strong>, is the only movie in the Outstanding Debut British Film category to also be in the running for Outstanding British Film. Early Man<\/em> was also overlooked, marking the first time a film by Nick Park<\/strong>\u2014a five-time BAFTA winner\u2014hasn’t been a competitor. However, BAFTA only reserves three slots in its animation category and it chose to honor Incredibles 2<\/em>, Isle of Dogs<\/em> and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Winners will be named Feb. 10 when Joanna Lumley<\/strong> hosts the show at Royal Albert Hall.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
