Good news,<\/span> Sopranos<\/span><\/em> fans! The TV show’s creator David Chase<\/strong> has finally\u00a0cast his Tony Soprano for the prequel film,<\/span> The Many Saints of Newark<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deadline<\/a><\/em> reports it’s none other than\u2014wait for it\u2014Michael Gandolfini<\/strong>. He’s the son of the late James Gandolfini<\/a><\/strong>, who originally played the organized crime family boss in the hit HBO series. The actor sadly passed away in 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano,” the 19-year-old actor tells Deadline<\/em> exclusively.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I’m thrilled that I’m going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for<\/span> The Many Saints of Newark<\/span><\/em>.”<\/span><\/p>\n

As for the rest of the “incredible company of talent” he’s talking about? Jon Bernthal<\/strong>,\u00a0Corey Stoll<\/strong>,\u00a0Alessandro Nivola<\/strong>,\u00a0Vera Farmiga<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Billy Magnussen<\/strong>\u00a0will star in the movie.\u00a0<\/span>Alan Taylor<\/strong>\u00a0is set to direct the New Line film.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Unlike the original HBO series, the prequel will take place in the \u201860s during the Newark riots, an era when African Americans and Italians were fighting.<\/p>\n

So how does Tony Soprano fit into all of this?<\/p>\n

We’ll get a glimpse into how he became a gangster.\u00a0Deadline<\/em>\u00a0reveals it will focus on Richard “Dickie” Moltisanti (played by Nivola) who mentors a young Tony and how his father, Johnny Boy, leads him to a path of organized crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

The news of the 19-year-old actor’s casting\u00a0comes off the heels of\u00a0<\/span>The Sopranos<\/span><\/em>\u00a020th anniversary, which was on Jan. 10.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of the cast members gathered in New York for a reunion.\u00a0Jamie-Lynn Sigler<\/strong>\u00a0andEdie Falco<\/a><\/strong> were among them.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Michael\u00a0took to Instagram<\/a>\u00a0to share pictures of his night, writing, “Damn I’m lucky that I got to grow up around these people. What a beautiful reunion. Big love all around.”<\/span><\/p>\n

He was posing next to Jamie-Lynn,\u00a0Robert Iler<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Tony Sirico<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Considering Gandolfini won multiple awards for his role as Tony Soprano, it will be interesting to see where this role takes his son, Michael.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

As of right now, there is no release date for the prequel.\u00a0In the meantime, we’ll be re-watching the HBO series.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
