21 Savage<\/strong>\u00a0was\u00a0arrested on Sunday by\u00a0U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement\u00a0and faces the possibility of being deported.<\/p>\n

Officials from the department say the 26-year-old, Atlanta-based, Grammy-nominatd rapper, whose real name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph<\/strong>, is from the United Kingdom and overstayed his visa, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution<\/a><\/em> reported. Past\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0had said\u00a021 Savage was born on the Caribbean island of Dominica, a former British colony.<\/p>\n

TMZ<\/a> quoted\u00a021 Savage’s attorney, Dina LaPolt<\/strong>, as saying, “We are working diligently to got Mr. Abraham-Joseph out of detention while we work with authorities to clear up any misunderstanding. Mr. Abraham-Joseph is a role model to the young people in the country\u2014especially in Atlanta, Georgia and is actively working in the community leading programs to help underprivileged mothers and youths in financial literacy.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

ICE spokesman Brian Cox<\/strong> told the\u00a0Atlanta Journal-Constitution\u00a0<\/em>that the rapper\u00a0is an “unlawfully present United Kingdom national” who legally entered the U.S. in July 2005 on a visa. He said the visa\u00a0expired\u00a0the following year.\u00a021 Savage has been placed in “removal proceedings before the federal immigration courts,” Cox said.<\/p>\n

“His whole public persona is false,” an ICE spokesperson told CNN<\/a>. “He actually came to the U.S. from the U.K. as a teen and overstayed his visa.”<\/p>\n

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also reported that the rapper has a criminal record; he was\u00a0convicted of felony drug charges in 2014 in\u00a0Georgia.<\/p>\n

21 Savage is known for tracks\u00a0such as “Bank Account” and “A Lot” featuring J. Cole<\/strong>.\u00a0He made headlines in 2017 when it was revealed he was dating\u00a0Amber Rose<\/a><\/strong>. They split the following year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
