ABC is saying goodbye to Phil, Claire, Jay, Gloria and the rest of the Modern Family<\/em> clan after the upcoming eleventh season.<\/p>\n

“[Co-creators Christopher Lloyd<\/strong> and Steven Levitan<\/strong>] have created one of the most seminal and iconic comedies in television history,” Karey Burke<\/strong>, president, ABC Entertainment, said in a statement after announcing the final season renewal at the 2019 Television Critics Association winter press tour<\/a>. “In its final season, there will be more milestone events that anyone who has been a fan of the series won’t want to miss.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

So\u2026why is it ending? The show has continued to be a strong ratings player for ABC, but aren’t near the highs they once were. Ahead of the final season renewal, Modern Family<\/em> contracts were only through season 10, leading many to believe that would the final outing. However, ahead of the season 10 premiere rumbles of a possible season 11 started. Deadline<\/a> reported all cast members were keen to continue with the show, as were producers and ABC. It seems to be the case of, “it’s just time.” However, Lloyd previously told E! News<\/a> working on season 10 and changing things up\u2014there was a death<\/a> and a surprise pregnancy<\/a> within weeks of each other\u2014invigorated the writers.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

“The way this season was developed, there’s a little bit more in the way of kind of real-life events than what you’ve seen in the past,” Lloyd told us after the series revealed<\/a> Sarah Hyland<\/a><\/strong>‘s character was pregnant. “But you know, in life, that happens where nothing at all particularly tumultuous happens, and then four things happen in the span of a couple of months.”<\/p>\n

Lloyd said the writers planned as if this was the last season, or second to last.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

“We actually went into the planning of the season with the idea that if we got excited about certain changes in the characters’ lives, we should do them, whether it was the final season or not,” Lloyd said. “Because it was just going to be good for the show, and we kind of planned that it could go either way. It would make for a very lively last season, but if we end up doing another season\u2014and I think it’s looking a little bit more likely that will happen\u2014we’ll just throw all these changes into people’s lives, which is only good in terms of new stuff for us to explore.”<\/p>\n

So, yes, they’re exploring new areas in the lives of these character, but how much more is there to do within the restrictions of an aging\u2014and expensive\u2014sitcom?<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

A deal for another season of Modern Family<\/em>\u2014and possible spinoffs\u2014was likely made easier thanks to the impending Disney acquisition of the series’ studio, 20th Century Fox TV.<\/p>\n

But they respect this series and the cast and the crew and the fans enough to end this properly.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Why:<\/strong> Creator Sam Esmail was ready to end the acclaimed series that put Rami Malek<\/strong> on the map. “When I first created the world of Mr. Robot<\/em>, I thought it would be a niche television series with a small, cult following. Over the past three years, it has become so much more, and I am continually humbled by the show’s recognition and by the amazing cast and crew that work tirelessly to help bring my vision to life,” Esmail said in a statement<\/a>. “Since day one, I’ve been building toward one conclusion \u2014 and in breaking the next season of Mr. Robot<\/em>, I have decided that conclusion is finally here. Everyone on the creative team, including the amazing people at USA and UCP, didn’t want to say goodbye, but we ultimately have too much respect for Elliot’s journey to extend past its inevitable ending. Therefore, season four will serve as the final chapter of the Mr. Robot<\/em> story. Anna Paqu<\/strong>in joins the cast for the final season that jumps around in time. “We love the intimacy, the nuance and the emotional honesty of The Affair’s subjective examination of both infidelity and fidelity,” Gary Levine<\/strong>, president of programming at Showtime, said in a statement. “Sarah Treem<\/strong> has always envisioned this as a five-season series, and we will be fascinated to see where she takes her talented cast and all of us next year in its climactic season.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Many assumed the seventh season would be the last, but the streaming platform didn’t confirm<\/a> until October 2018. Series creator Jenji Kohan<\/strong> hasn’t explicitly said why she wanted to end the show after seven seasons, the story does seem to be heading to a natural end. Piper (Taylor Schilling<\/strong>) was originally only sentenced to roughly a year in prison and season six ended with her finally getting released. “After seven seasons, it’s time to be released from prison. I will miss all the badass ladies of Litchfield and the incredible crew we’ve worked with,” Kohan said in a statement. “My heart is orange but fade to black.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Big Bang THeory<\/em><\/h3>\n

Why:<\/strong> Isn’t 12 seasons enough? No? CBS boss Kelly Kahl<\/strong> said the network was in talks<\/a> with producer Warner Bros. TV about Big Bang<\/em> season 13, but that all changed. Why? Series star Jim Parsons<\/strong> was ready to move on<\/a> and the show wouldn’t continue without him. “It’s both as complex and as simple as just feeling innately that it was time. It speaks to a lot of things, none of them bad. There is no negative reason to stop doing Big Bang<\/em>. It felt like we have been able to do this for so many years now, it doesn’t feel like there is anything left on the table,” Parsons told EW<\/a>. “Not that we couldn’t keep doing it, but it feels like we’ve chewed all the meat off this bone. I guess at a personal level, it feels like the right time in my life.”<\/p>\n

However, Parsons is still an executive producer and narrator of Young Sheldon<\/em>, so he’s not going very far.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
