Gabrielle Union<\/a><\/strong> says she felt like she was “surrendering to failure” when she and husband\u00a0Dwyane Wade<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0decided to have a surrogate carry their child.<\/p>\n

The 46-year-old\u00a0Being Mary Jane<\/em>\u00a0alum and\u00a0Bring It On<\/em> actress, who is also a stepmother to the NBA star’s three sons from previous relationships,\u00a0has\u00a0been open about her struggle with infertility<\/a>. She has said she\u00a0suffers\u00a0from\u00a0adenomyosis, a type of\u00a0endometriosis, which can impair both the quantity and quality of a woman’s eggs\u2014factors already not working in the actress’ favor given her age. Union said in 2017 that she had undergone at least eight miscarriages<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In November,\u00a0Union made a surprise announcement that she and Wade\u00a0had welcomed their first child<\/a> together, a baby girl, via a surrogate.<\/p>\n

“There’s nothing more that I wanted than to cook my own baby,” Union told\u00a0Women’s Health<\/em> in a cover interview published in its\u00a0March 2019\u00a0issue. “The idea of\u00a0[using a surrogate] felt like surrendering to failure.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

“People want to see the bump, hear that you got hemorrhoids\u2014they want to know you’re like them,” she continued. “I was like, ‘This is going to seem like the most Hollywood s–t ever. Will I be embraced as a mom?’ It’s terrifying.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Late last year, Union told Oprah Winfrey<\/a><\/strong> in an interview<\/a> that having infertility made her think, “Did I fail in some kind of way? Am I defective in some kind of way? Am I less than in some kind of way? Am I less worthy in some kind of way?”<\/p>\n

Union talked to\u00a0Women’s Health<\/em> about her criteria for finding a surrogate to carry her and Wade’s daughter, Kaavia James<\/strong>. She said she wanted the woman to like reading books.<\/p>\n

The actress\u00a0said when her and Wade’s daughter\u00a0was born, she\u00a0was like, “Oh my God, this is my baby,” adding, “I wanted to fight everybody in that room for various reasons and no reason.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Now in her\u00a0forties, Union says she is “in the right mindset and mental space,” and “open to being the best mom I can be.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
