Ray Pillar of Character Award in his native Iowa in 2017. &#8220;I&#8217;m probably also the first guy to get this award for character who ever got pulled over by a state trooper while tripping on mushrooms\u2014not a proud moment. The trooper didn&#8217;t know, so we got away with it! I just said I had a\u00a0headlight out, and I had several headlights out. I&#8217;m also probably the first person to get this award for character who had his name splashed across every gossip magazine as an adulterer, like, five years ago.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In other words, summed up the actor, there&#8217;s always time to rectify past missteps: &#8220;There&#8217;s somebody in the back that&#8217;s going, &#8216;So you&#8217;re saying there&#8217;s a chance!&#8217; And what I&#8217;m actually, like,\u00a0legitimately saying is, there&#8217;s a chance. Look, it happened!&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"69.024154589372\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"30.351046698873\">\n<p>Dude, where&#8217;s the frat boy? In a way, even\u00a0Kutcher, marking his 41st birthday today, marvels at\u00a0the seamless transition from his handsome ditz persona, ruling TV screens as dimwitted Kelso on <em>That &#8217;70s Show<\/em> and as a fun-loving prankster on his gotcha-style reality hit <em>Punk&#8217;d<\/em>, to his life as a devoted father of two and daring venture capitalist with enough cash on hand to funnel $4 million into his charity of choice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s just one aspect of his decidedly grown-up existence. The onetime Abercrombie &amp; Fitch model\u2014and dedicated wearer of trucker caps\u2014also co-founded an investment fund, Sound Ventures, a digital media company, A Plus, dedicated to promoting more positive journalistic pieces and a nonprofit, Thorn, that helps fight the sexual exploitation of children.<\/p>\n<p>And while you can still catch him on the small screen (his Netflix series\u00a0<em>The Ranch\u00a0<\/em>has been renewed for a fourth season), he now picks projects with one aim in mind. &#8220;For me, the difference has become doing things that have some level of social relevance,&#8221; he explained to former <em>Punk&#8217;d<\/em> partner <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/dax_shepard\">Dax Shepard<\/a><\/strong> on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/915125\/ashton-kutcher-and-dax-shepard-dish-on-balding-drinking-and-robot-sex-in-candid-podcast\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Armchair Expert<\/em><\/a> podcast, &#8220;that have the potential to leave an imprint and change the way people see something or think about something.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-3-img\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"post-content__image\" readability=\"32\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2016919\/rs_1024x759-161019172033-1024-ashton-kutcker-mila-kunis-mv-101916.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" border=\"0\" title=\"Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis\" alt=\"Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"759\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Courtesy of Los Angeles Dodgers<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-3\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"40.650777202073\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"23.229015544041\">\n<p>Back when he was a brother in the University of Iowa&#8217;s Delta Chi chapter\u00a0his highest goal was to move to Hollywood, he recalled, &#8220;and be on the big screen.&#8221; After landing the role of Kelso his\u00a0first week of auditioning\u00a0in 1998 and\u00a0a string of parts in\u00a0successful, but less than critically acclaimed, rom-coms, he revised it to winning an Oscar. (Though he jokes that ambition is lofty: &#8220;Yeah, good luck with that one, buddy. You&#8217;re a different kind of actor.&#8221;)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On set with a slew of somewhat like-minded and similarly aged costars, including future wife <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/mila_kunis\">Mila Kunis<\/a><\/strong> (&#8220;I think we had to both go through a lot in our lives to become the people that we were,&#8221; she&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/839396\/how-mila-kunis-and-ashton-kutcher-keep-pulling-off-the-impossible-for-a-hollywood-couple\" target=\"_blank\">explained<\/a> of their delayed coupling, &#8220;we would never be together based on the people that we used to be,&#8221;) he made the most of life in L.A. &#8220;I was 20 years old, going out every night, partying and being a kid,&#8221; he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/technology-gear\/a19532218\/tapping-future\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Men&#8217;s Health<\/em><\/a> in 2011. &#8220;The work was sort of a facilitator for a good time.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-4\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"41.407815631263\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"25.701402805611\">\n<p>But as hard as he played, he was perhaps working even harder. Two years into his star-making gig, at the ripe old age of 22, he founded his own production company, Katalyst, to develop movies and TV shows. Enter: <em>Punk&#8217;d<\/em>.\u00a0By getting the best of A-listers such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/justin_timberlake\">Justin Timberlake<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/britney_spears\">Britney Spears<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/kanye_west\">Kanye West<\/a><\/strong>, he entered a new word into\u00a0the public vernacular and cemented\u00a0his position\u00a0as the fun-loving guy you&#8217;d want to have a beer with. But he feared it was a rep he&#8217;d never shed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some five years after 2000&#8217;s <em>Dude, Where&#8217;s My Car?<\/em>, &#8220;people were still, &#8216;Dude, sweet&#8217;-ing me,&#8221; he explained to <a href=\"https:\/\/armchairexpertpod.com\/pods\/ashton-kutcher\" target=\"_blank\">Shepard<\/a>. &#8220;I was like, &#8216;Really&#8230;can I do something else with my career that&#8217;s significant?'&#8221; The effects of <em>Punk&#8217;d<\/em> were even longer-lasting. &#8220;Still, today, people are like, &#8216;Are you punking me?'&#8221; he admitted. And no matter how grateful he was for the achievement, &#8220;You kind of want to get away from it and put the next thing under the belt because you don&#8217;t want to be known for the one thing.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-5\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"38.395709177592\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"17.721096543504\">\n<p>It was his quest for that next thing\u2014leading man status\u2014that inspired his entree into the tech world. After scoring a part in 2005&#8217;s <em>Elizabethtown<\/em>, a lack of preparedness got him sacked. (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/orlando_bloom\">Orlando Bloom<\/a><\/strong>, fresh from <em>Lord of the Rings<\/em> fame, stepped in.) &#8220;I was way too cocky and way too arrogant and way too sure that I had already got there,&#8221; he explained to Shepard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Realizing he could no longer rest on his good-looking laurels,\u00a0he sought out an acting coach and read up on the craft, &#8220;because before I usually showed up and put whatever I had in the room and that was enough,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But it also made me double down on other things.&#8221;\u00a0An early adopter to Twitter (and the first to collect a million followers), he says he &#8220;started finding a bunch of other things that I thought were interesting and started investing in them.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-6\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"42.453033268102\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"32\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2016422\/rs_634x1024-160522170535-634-ashton-kutcher-2016-billboard-music-awards.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Ashton Kutcher, 2016 Billboard Music Awards\" alt=\"Ashton Kutcher, 2016 Billboard Music Awards\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">David Becker\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"23.686746987952\">\n<p>As it turned out, he had quite the eye. His prescient ability to pick winners\u2014&#8221;You&#8217;re investing 100 things so that two work and cover all your losses,&#8221; he said\u2014led him to sink money into\u00a0more than 60 brands, including\u00a0Skype, Uber, Airbnb,\u00a0Spotify and Warby Parker. And in 2015 he took on another gig managing other people&#8217;s money when he and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/madonna\">Madonna<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s manager <strong>Guy Oseary<\/strong> launched their investment fund, Sound Ventures. &#8220;Every single person in our portfolio has\u00a0our personal phone numbers,&#8221; he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zackomalleygreenburg\/2016\/03\/23\/how-ashton-kutcher-and-guy-oseary-built-a-250-million-portfolio-with-startups-like-uber-and-airbnb\/#4b9f622a1175\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Forbes<\/em><\/a> of his commitment. &#8220;They can call us at any point in time, 24 hours a day.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The duo have aptly turned millions into a lot more millions, but making the rich richer isn&#8217;t their sole goal. Dedicated to truly helping promising companies get off the ground, he told the outlet, &#8220;If we don&#8217;t make a dollar, but we change the world in a meaningful way because we solve real problems and we support great people and do our best to help, the returns are going to be the exhaust of that.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-8\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"65.624084621644\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"28.855980471928\">\n<p>Which brings us to this past\u00a0May and the $4 million he presented to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/ellen_degeneres\">Ellen DeGeneres<\/a><\/strong> on behalf of one of his and Oseary&#8217;s new tech ventures, Ripple. The money transferring service, he explained on her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/938362\/ashton-kutcher-shocks-ellen-degeneres-with-a-4-million-donation\" target=\"_blank\">show<\/a>, truly cares &#8220;about being an ethical company and giving a portion of this platform away to people that are doing good in the world.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With Kutcher as a guide, they honed in\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/910916\/ellen-degeneres-cries-after-receiving-the-best-birthday-gift-from-portia-de-rossi\" target=\"_blank\">The Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund<\/a> and the host&#8217;s plan to build a sanctuary for mountain gorillas.\u00a0&#8220;You&#8217;re always thinking about everyone else and we wanted to show you that people are thinking about you,&#8221; Kutcher noted. &#8220;So, on behalf of Ripple, we&#8217;d like to give you $4 million.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Of course, for Kutcher, largesse extends beyond writing checks. (Or, in this case, hitting a button that instantly transfers the cash in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/05\/24\/ashton-kutcher-gave-ellen-degeneres-ripples-xrp-for-charity.html\" target=\"_blank\">cryptocurrency<\/a>.) Nine years ago,\u00a0he and then-wife\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/demi_moore\">Demi Moore<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0quietly founded DNA (renamed Thorn after their split), an international humans rights organization with the grand aim of ending child pornography.\u00a0&#8220;Once I started to gain some level of fame, I was constantly being asked to lend my name to this or that,&#8221; he explained to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmagazine.com\/story\/ashton-kutcher-thorn-charity\" target=\"_blank\">W<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmagazine.com\/story\/ashton-kutcher-thorn-charity\" target=\"_blank\">Magazine<\/a>. &#8220;And I was wondering, Is there a single cause that I can really get behind?&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-9-img\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"post-content__image\" readability=\"32\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2018423\/rs_1024x691-180523084130-Ellen-DeGeneres-donation.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" border=\"0\" title=\"Ashton Kutcher, Ellen DeGeneres\" alt=\"Ashton Kutcher, Ellen DeGeneres\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"691\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Michael Rozman\/Warner Bros.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-9\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"45.064695009242\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"31.349353049908\">\n<p>The answer came to him as he and Moore caught a <em>Dateline<\/em> special about sex trafficking: &#8220;Those Cambodian kids were 7, 8, 9 years old. I started asking around, and people said to me, &#8216;Oh, no, it&#8217;s happening right here in Los Angeles.'&#8221; What&#8217;s more, he learned, some 70 percent of child sex trafficking in the United States takes place online. &#8220;This was a medium I had a lot of experience with,&#8221; he told the mag, &#8220;where I knew a lot of folks who could help.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Treading on relationships he&#8217;d formed with companies such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Twitter, he convinced them to\u00a0create an alliance that builds software and other online tools that help police identify cyberspace criminals. And while he&#8217;s hesitant to get into details for the most obvious of reasons\u2014&#8221;Revealing our tactics would get in the way of our goals,&#8221;\u2014he&#8217;s happy to provide a progress report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yesterday I was driving from a meeting,&#8221; Kutcher informed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/howard_stern\">Howard Stern<\/a><\/strong> on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howardstern.com\/show\/2017\/6\/21\/ashton-kutcher-backing-uber-passing-snapchat-and-which-startup-his-favorite\/\" target=\"_blank\">radio show<\/a> last summer, &#8220;and I get a text that&#8230;the Department of Homeland Security found, like, six kids using our software.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-11\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"69.064885496183\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"30.368956743003\">\n<p>Long adept at juggling\u00a0several gigs, Kutcher still has one foot firmly in the world of acting. But these days, he&#8217;s less eager to sign on for roles as the somewhat hapless protagonist. Following a\u00a0four-season stint replacing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/charlie_sheen\">Charlie Sheen<\/a><\/strong> on <em>Two and a Half Men<\/em> (&#8220;It was a very, very, very nice payday,&#8221; he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howardstern.com\/show\/2017\/6\/21\/ashton-kutcher-gives-howard-his-side-story-how-he-and-mila-kunis-became-more-just-friends\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stern<\/a> of pocketing $700,000 per episode) he now\u00a0accepts parts with an eye towards social mindedness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>The Ranch<\/em>, about two cash-strapped brothers\u00a0trying to keep their homestead alive, was meant to couch crucial issues in a comedy-shaped package. And it was important for\u00a0the Midwesterner to recognize an audience he doesn&#8217;t feel is well-represented on TV. Growing up watching the blue-collar characters on <em>Roseanne<\/em>, he said, &#8220;It made me feel like my family wasn&#8217;t alone in our struggles.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A handful of seasons in, the series has already tackled\u00a0topics such as abortion\u00a0and immigration in an authentic, measured way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;None of these issues are cut-and-dried and simple,&#8221; Kutcher noted to <a href=\"https:\/\/parade.com\/579078\/amyspencer\/fathers-day-tales-from-ashton-kutcher-and-sam-elliott-co-stars-of-the-ranch\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Parade<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;If it were easy, people would just fix it! That&#8217;s how I introduce myself,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I am <strong>Wyatt<\/strong> and <strong>Dimitri<\/strong>&#8216;s dad. It&#8217;s my number one gig. Everything else is secondary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Because Wyatt&#8217;s\u00a0October 2014\u00a0arrival, followed by her little brother\u00a0Dimitri 25\u00a0months later, forever changed him. &#8220;It&#8217;s unbelievable. It&#8217;s the greatest thing on earth,&#8221; he told <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/conan_obrien\">Conan O&#8217;Brien<\/a><\/strong> of welcoming Wyatt. &#8220;As soon as this child was born I immediately wanted to call my parents and just apologize because I never knew how much they loved me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A chance encounter with 35-year-old Kunis at\u00a0the 2012\u00a0Golden Globes\u00a0(&#8220;I was like, &#8216;Ohh, he&#8217;s kind of hot,'&#8221; she has said of spying a tall guy in front of her, &#8220;and then he turned around and I was like, &#8216;Oh my god, it&#8217;s Kutch!'&#8221;) was equally soul-shifting.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-13\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"45.601582014988\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"33.601165695254\">\n<p>At\u00a0the time, Kutcher, who romanced <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/brittany_murphy\">Brittany Murphy<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/nelly_furtado\">Nelly Furtado<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/january_jones\">January Jones<\/a><\/strong> before settling down with Moore in 2005, was not far removed from their rough divorce. The split was made public in 2011 not long after Kutcher was splashed across the aforementioned magazines, a 22-year-old administrative assistant detailing their supposed hotel romp and Kutcher&#8217;s assertion that he was already single.
