For many artists, winning a Grammy is a career highlight. For Demi Lovato<\/a><\/strong>, it’s a peak she has yet to reach.<\/p>\n

“Winning a Grammy is the pinnacle of success as an artist in the music industry,” she once told the Recording Academy<\/a>. “So, to me, it would just be all of my dreams coming true.”<\/p>\n

Lovato made her Grammys debut<\/a> in 2016, when she performed a group tribute to Lionel Richie<\/strong>. She then earned her first nomination<\/a> in 2017 for Confident<\/em>, which was up for Best Pop Vocal Album. However, Adele<\/a><\/strong> ended up taking home the trophy<\/a> for 25<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Of course, everyone in the category was amazing,” Lovato told Ellen DeGeneres<\/a><\/strong>, “but even my mom was like, ‘You know that Adele is going to win this.'”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Still, the loss didn’t rock Lovato’s confidence. In fact, she credited the nomination with helping her stay in the biz. The former Disney Channel star had announced plans to take a “break from music and the spotlight” just the year before.<\/p>\n

“I got a Grammy nomination, and I felt like it was God’s way of saying, ‘You’re on the right path. Stay strong at what you do and work hard,'”\u00a0she told Official Charts<\/a>. “I’d [gotten] fed up with the media twisting my words and making me sound a certain way. When I got the Grammy nomination, it changed things for me.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

The second nomination<\/a> came this year. The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer earned a nod in the Best Pop Duo\/Group Performance category for “Fall in Line”<\/a> with Christina Aguilera<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“Woke up filled with hope,” Lovato tweeted after learning of her nod<\/a>. “Dreams come true y’all… thank you @xtina. I love you so much.”<\/p>\n

Part of the dream came from sharing the acknowledgement with one of her idols.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I grew up in Texas, singing to @xtina every day, DESPERATELY trying to hit her high notes,” Lovato tweeted. “If you would’ve told me I’d have a Grammy nod with her I would’ve laughed in your face!! This is so surreal.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Another part may have come from having the song’s message be so well received. Lovato once described the music video<\/a> as “powerful” and said its message of “women supporting each other through their struggles” was “so important” to her.<\/p>\n

Or, perhaps, the dream stemmed from the fact that Lovato had just survived a struggle of her own.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

In July 2018, Lovato was hospitalized after suffering an overdose<\/a>. The news came just a month after\u00a0she\u00a0released “Sober,”<\/a> a song about relapsing. The artist had celebrated six years of sobriety<\/a> just four months before; although, a source told E! News she had\u00a0gone on a “downward spiral.”\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Skyscraper” singer’s family<\/a> and ex Wilmer Valderrama<\/a><\/strong> rushed to the hospital<\/a> to be by her side.<\/a><\/p>\n

“We got there as quickly as we could,” her mother<\/a>, Dianna de la Garza<\/strong> told Newsmax TV<\/em>. “Dallas and Madison and I jumped out of the car at the emergency room and ran into the emergency room to be by her side. She just didn’t look good\u2014at all. She was in bad shape. But I said to her, ‘Demi, I’m here. I love you.’ And at that point she said back to me, ‘I love you, too.'”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

Several celebrities also shared their prayers and well-wishes<\/a> for the star on social media. But the one fans really wanted to hear from was Lovato. About two weeks later, after\u00a0she had battled through side effects of the overdose<\/a>, the “Heart Attack” singer broke her silence<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction,” she wrote in part of her statement on Instagram. “What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

After leaving the hospital<\/a>, Lovato attended rehab<\/a> and reportedly spent time at both a treatment center<\/a> and a sober living facility<\/a>. She also remained committed to her recovery. An eyewitness previously told E! News Lovato was spotted attending meetings and therapy sessions<\/a>, and another source said she’s been exercising<\/a>, eating right and adopting a “whole different mindset.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It’s going to be a lifelong commitment and her treatment will not end because she is out of rehab,” another source said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n

However, it looks like all of Lovato’s hard work is paying off. In January, she celebrated six months of sobriety<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And just like in “Fall in Line,” Lovato\u00a0can count on the support\u00a0of other women to help her get through this tough time. During a recent interview<\/a> with The Associated Press, Aguilera described Lovato as someone who knows how to “be strong and pull through.”<\/p>\n

“Everybody has their own things they go through,” Aguilera said, “and I’m just so proud of her and I just think she is so adorable and such a talent.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
