{"id":267288,"date":"2019-02-11T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-02-11T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kidn\/music-news\/sexual-abuse-claims-a-secret-romance-and-her-private-heartache-inside-the-life-death-and-continuing-legacy-of-whitney-houston\/"},"modified":"2019-02-11T07:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-02-11T14:00:00","slug":"sexual-abuse-claims-a-secret-romance-and-her-private-heartache-inside-the-life-death-and-continuing-legacy-of-whitney-houston","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kidn\/music-news\/sexual-abuse-claims-a-secret-romance-and-her-private-heartache-inside-the-life-death-and-continuing-legacy-of-whitney-houston\/","title":{"rendered":"Sexual Abuse Claims, a Secret Romance and Her Private Heartache: Inside the Life, Death and Continuing Legacy of Whitney Houston"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"photo-txt-0\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"42.428396072013\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"30.110474631751\">\n<p>Since her heartbreaking, premature death in 2012, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/whitney_houston\">Whitney Houston<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s life has been examined from every angle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In those first days after she was discovered face down\u00a0in a hotel bathroom precisely seven years ago, on Feb. 11, 2012, countless obituaries were written, reflecting on the legacy of the 48-year-old musical icon,\u00a0her\u00a0brilliant, unmatched\u00a0voice and the enumerable hardships she faced.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then came the postmortem discoveries: Former husband <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/bobby_brown\">Bobby Brown<\/a><\/strong> claimed in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/616028\/whitney-houston-remembered-by-bobby-brown-in-candid-lifetime-tv-interview-singer-talks-drugs-infidelity-love-and-redemption\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> &#8220;both of us cheated on each other,&#8221; and said in his 2016 memoir, <em>Every Little Step<\/em>, that they had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/771096\/bobby-brown-admits-he-once-hit-whitney-houston-and-used-drugs-while-bobbi-kristina-brown-was-in-the-house\" target=\"_blank\">tasked a nanny<\/a> to care for daughter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/bobbi_kristina_brown\">Bobbi Kristina Brown<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in another wing of the house while\u00a0they got high. Rumors surfaced about Whitney&#8217;s too-close relationship with friend and assistant-turned-creative director\u00a0<strong>Robyn Crawford<\/strong> and the 2017 documentary <em>Whitney: Can I Be Me<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/features\/whitney-houston-documentary-can-i-be-me-things-we-learned-w499347\" target=\"_blank\">alleged<\/a> a bodyguard was fired\u00a0after filing a detailed report of\u00a0the singer&#8217;s drug use.<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, there was a new rush of articles in 2015 when, in an eerie\u00a0twist, Whitney&#8217;s only child, then-21-year-old Bobbi Kristina\u00a0was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/620536\/bobbi-kristina-brown-hospitalized-whitney-houston-s-daughter-was-found-unresponsive-in-bathtub-police-say\" target=\"_blank\">found\u00a0unresponsive<\/a> in much the same state as her mom, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/620807\/bobbi-kristina-brown-dead-at-22-whitney-houston-bobby-brown-s-daughter-passes-after-nearly-7-month-coma\" target=\"_blank\">passing away<\/a> six months later without ever\u00a0regaining consciousness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-2\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"66.2048012003\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"26.865716429107\">\n<p>So one might think there&#8217;s simply nothing more to say about one of the greatest\u00a0pop stars that ever lived.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Enter <em>Whitney<\/em>. The documentary, painstakingly assembled with the help of Houston&#8217;s relatives and closest companions, revealed even more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/936444\/5-biggest-bombshells-from-the-new-whitney-houston-documentary\" target=\"_blank\">agonizing truths<\/a> about the\u00a0seven-time Grammy winner&#8217;s life. As a child, her half-brother <strong>Gary Garland-Houston<\/strong> and assistant <strong>Mary Jones<\/strong> allege in the film, Whitney was sexually molested by her cousin, singer <strong>Dee Dee Warick<\/strong>, sister of music legend <strong>Dionne Warwick<\/strong>. The traumatizing incidents, Jones suggests, would lead Houston to\u00a0question her sexuality for the rest of her life. And\u00a0though she went on to marry R&amp;B bad boy Brown\u00a0in 1992, she did, in fact, maintain\u00a0a romantic relationship with Crawford.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mom <strong>Cissy Houston<\/strong> remains torn on the validity of the accusation, noting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/951003\/whitney-houston-s-mother-reacts-to-claims-her-daughter-was-molested-by-dee-dee-warwick\" target=\"_blank\">in a statement<\/a> to <em>People<\/em>,\u00a0that neither\u00a0Houston nor Dee Dee\u00a0are alive to &#8220;deny, refute or affirm&#8221; the accusations. But Jones felt it important to share. She\u00a0&#8220;decided this was the elephant in the room that nobody wanted to talk about,&#8221; director <strong>Kevin Macdonald\u00a0<\/strong>explained to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2018\/05\/whitney-houston-sexual-assault-allegations-documentary-cannes-1201965558\/\" target=\"_blank\">IndieWire<\/a>\u00a0of the sexual abuse ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/930422\/new-whitney-trailer-reminds-us-why-we-ll-always-love-whitney-houston\" target=\"_blank\">film&#8217;s premiere<\/a> at the Cannes Film Festival. &#8220;And she felt so strongly that this was the thing that was the catalyst of so many things in Whitney&#8217;s life. The documentary includes footage of Whitney giving an interview back in the early 90s, where she was asked what was the worst thing that could happen to a child, sister-in-law <strong>Pat Houston<\/strong> points out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/videos\/275069\/pat-houston-opens-up-about-whitney-documentary\" target=\"_blank\">E! News<\/a>,\u00a0&#8220;And she said, &#8216;Child abuse.&#8217; And she spoke about it herself. So she has narrative in the film and she&#8217;s talking about certain aspects of her life that she doesn&#8217;t like.&#8221; While\u00a0Pat acknowledges it can be tough to learn some of these long-kept secrets, she adds, &#8220;Fans have to understand she has a human story that mirrors all of ours. She&#8217;s just a human that had a phenomenal gift that she shared with the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As backing vocalist <strong>Pattie Howard<\/strong> put it, Whitney grew up in &#8220;the &#8216;hood&#8221; of Newark, N.J. But after the 1967 race riots,\u00a0her family settled in nearby, middle class East Orange. The daughter of gospel and pop singer Cissy (she backed up <strong>Elvis Presley<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/aretha_franklin\">Aretha Franklin<\/a><\/strong>, who would become Whitney&#8217;s godmother) and cousin of Dionne Warwick, she had the skills, beauty and pedigree to become a pop star.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-4-img\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"31.5\">\n<div class=\"post-content__image\" readability=\"33\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2017110\/rs_1024x759-170210145752-1024-cissy-whitney-houston-ls.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" border=\"0\" title=\"Cissy Houston, Whitney Houston\" alt=\"Cissy Houston, Whitney Houston\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"759\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Ron Galella, Ltd.\/WireImage<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-4\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"41.831761006289\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"24.606918238994\">\n<p>She cut her teeth singing in\u00a0the choir at Newark&#8217;s New Hope Baptist Church, before trying her hand at modeling (she would appear\u00a0in the pages of <em>Seventeen<\/em>, <em>Glamour<\/em> and <em>Cosmopolitan<\/em>) and working as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/293573\/the-life-of-whitney-houston-a-timeline-aug-9-1963-feb-11-2012\" target=\"_blank\">backup studio singer<\/a>\u00a0for the likes of <strong>Chaka Khan<\/strong> and The Neville Brothers. Though talent scouts expressed interest in backing her career, Cissy insisted they would have to wait until the teen graduated from her all-girls Catholic high school.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That big break\u00a0would come when <strong>Gerry Griffith<\/strong>, director of A&amp;R for Arista Records heard\u00a0the 18-year-old\u00a0deliver a solo at New York City&#8217;s Seventh Avenue South nightclub. He signed her and tasked none other than label founder <strong>Clive Davis<\/strong> with supervising the two-year production\u00a0of her self-titled 1985 debut\u2014a disc that\u00a0paired her three-octave, impassioned vocals with polished, catchy tracks such as &#8220;Saving All My Love for You,&#8221; &#8220;How Will I Know&#8221; and &#8220;The Greatest Love of All&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The trio of number one singles and a best female pop vocal Grammy, matched with her good girl image propelled Houston\u00a0away from her humble roots into the\u00a0upper most echelon: celebrity. Her follow-up, 1987&#8217;s <em>Whitney<\/em> notched four more hit singles\u00a0while the slightly more R&amp;B-laced <em>I&#8217;m Your Baby Tonight<\/em>, brought in two more in 1990.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-5\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"39.412244897959\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2012114\/634.houston.021412.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Whitney Houston\" alt=\"Whitney Houston\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Larry Busacca\/WireImage<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"19.70024979184\">\n<p>But her carefully cultivated persona and success (her seven consecutive number one hits pushed her past The Beatles&#8217; previously held record) presented drawbacks.\u00a0At the height of her career, Whitney was <a href=\"http:\/\/gawker.com\/remember-when-whitney-houston-got-booed-for-being-too-w-1660783143\" target=\"_blank\">roundly booed<\/a> at the 1989 Soul Train Awards\u2014the popular\u00a0assumption\u00a0being that black audiences disapproved of her crossover style. In Cissy&#8217;s 2013 memoir, <em>Remembering Whitney<\/em> she recalled hearing someone &#8220;yelling &#8216;White-ey! White-ey!&#8217; like it was something clever.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Whitney would muse to <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=UdQDAAAAMBAJ&amp;pg=PA110&amp;lpg=PA110&amp;dq=%22I+know+what+my+color+is.%22+whitney+ebony&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=y9SV6WFrqn&amp;sig=AeIc6NQPnMoPfDPeeTO_TNPBGIU&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=B4ZvVPKEK8fOsQSnjYDgCA&amp;ved=0CCUQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&amp;q=%22I%20know%20what%20my%20color%20is.%22%20whitney%20ebony&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Ebony<\/em><\/a> in 1991 that fans &#8220;had just gotten sick of me and just didn&#8217;t want me to win another award,&#8221; but in a chat with <strong>Arsenio Hall<\/strong> that same year she agreed that race had played a role.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They boo me at the Soul Train Awards\u2026I don&#8217;t really know what it&#8217;s about. But I think that I&#8217;ve got a lot of flak about I sing too white or I sing\u2026white or something like that. I think that maybe that&#8217;s where it comes from,&#8221; she told Hall. &#8220;I haven&#8217;t had the opportunity to ask why I get booed at the Soul Train Awards, but I grew up on Soul Train just like every other black kid, you know?&#8230;I do sing the way God intended for me to sing and I&#8217;m using what he gave me and I&#8217;m using it to the best of my ability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-7\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"67.053089643168\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"25.637946040035\">\n<p>Her sound wasn&#8217;t\u00a0her only strife. Houston was also allegedly hiding her romance with Crawford.\u00a0An\u00a0all-state basketball star two years\u00a0her elder, Crawford met Whitney when\u00a0the singer was just a 16-year-old with a summer job at a community center, but she already had big visions for the future. &#8220;She looked like an angel,&#8221; Crawford\u00a0recalled in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/music\/a12753\/whitney-houston-6654718\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Esquire<\/em><\/a> tribute the day after Whitney&#8217;s death. &#8220;Not long after I met her, she said, &#8216;Stick with me, and I&#8217;ll take you around the world.&#8217; She always knew where she was headed.&#8221; Their first stop together: a shared apartment, when Whitney moved out of the family home at 18.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think she was gay, I think she was bisexual,&#8221; Whitney&#8217;s make-up artist and friend <strong>Ellin Lavar<\/strong> noted in <em>Whitney: Can I Be Me<\/em>. &#8220;Robyn provided a safe place for her. In that, Whitney found safety and solace.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But not the freedom to come clean about her romance. Brown told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrity-news\/news\/bobby-brown-whitney-houston-had-same-sex-romance-with-robyn-crawford-w209306\/\" target=\"_blank\">Us Weekly<\/a><\/em>\u00a0he thought &#8220;Whitney would still be alive today&#8221; if Crawford had been accepted into her life (she quit as Houston&#8217;s\u00a0creative director in 2000), but the singer felt the need to keep\u00a0their bond hidden, fearing Cissy&#8217;s disapproval.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-8\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"42.610065466448\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"32\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/2018029\/rs_634x1024-180129145233-634-whitney-houston-super-bowl.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Whitney Houston\" alt=\"Whitney Houston\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Al Messerschmidt\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"24.47567114094\">\n<p>She was right to worry. In her 2013 book, the matriarch wrote about her dislike for Crawford, a woman she thought spoke too much and acted overly familiar. Her words caused <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/oprah_winfrey\">Oprah Winfrey<\/a><\/strong> to ask her in an interview that same year, &#8220;Would it have bothered you if your daughter was gay?&#8221; &#8220;Absolutely,&#8221; Cissy answered. Would she have condoned it? &#8220;Not at all.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So when\u00a0Houston crossed paths with Brown at that same fateful Soul Train Awards, the New Edition bad boy (at 20 he&#8217;d already been shot at and stabbed and fathered two kids) seemed the perfect solution to\u00a0both of her problems and the instantly smitten singer reportedly declared, &#8220;That is going to be my husband.&#8221;\u00a0They wed in front of 800 guests at her New Jersey mansion in July 1992\u00a0and welcomed Bobbi Kristina\u00a0eight months later.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Together, they were a formidable pair. Brown gave\u00a0Houston the street cred she so desperately desired as she continued to churn out pop hits and venture into acting, with her first memorable role as a pop diva in 1992&#8217;s <em>The Bodyguard<\/em>. (Thanks, in large part to her stunning version of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/dolly_parton\">Dolly Parton<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s &#8220;I Will Always Love You,&#8221; the film would produce the best-selling soundtrack of all time.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-9\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"37.639240506329\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/201455\/rs_634x1024-140605093624-634.Whitney-Houston-Wedding-Bobby-Brown.jl.060514.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, Wedding\" alt=\"Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, Wedding\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Associated Press<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"15.845327604726\">\n<p>But their union was an uneasy one. In Derrick Handspike&#8217;s unauthorized biography <em>Bobby Brown: The Truth, The Whole Truth and Nothing But&#8230;<\/em> he quotes Brown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/bobby-brown-whitney-used-me\/\" target=\"_blank\">as saying<\/a>, &#8220;Now I realize Whitney had a different agenda than I did when we get married. I believe her agenda was to clean up her image while mine was to be loved and have children. Whitney felt she had to make rumors of a lesbian affair go away. Since she was American Sweetheart and all, that didn&#8217;t go too well with her image. In Whitney&#8217;s situation the only solution was to get married and have kids. That would kill all speculation whether it was true or not.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And then, of course, there were the drugs. It&#8217;s easy to suggest Brown\u00a0set the church-going gospel singer\u00a0on the pathway to her addiction.\u00a0But that dubious honor actually belongs to her older brother <strong>Michael Houston<\/strong>, who\u00a0admits in <em>Whitney\u00a0<\/em>that they first started getting high together when she was 16.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-10\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"44.020100502513\">\n<div class=\"column post-content__image--left post-content__image\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"32\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image--full\" src=\"https:\/\/akns-images.eonline.com\/eol_images\/Entire_Site\/201512\/rs_634x1024-150202093022-634.ab.bobbi.021512.jpg?fit=inside|900:auto&amp;output-quality=90\" title=\"Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, Bobbi Kristina Brown \" alt=\"Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, Bobbi Kristina Brown \"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"image__credits\">Ron Wolfson\/\/Time Life Pictures\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"27.366405570061\">\n<p>Brown, himself, claimed in his 2016 memoir, <em>Every Little Step<\/em>, to not have even been aware of\u00a0Whitney&#8217;s drug use until he saw her &#8220;hunched over a bureau snorting a line of coke&#8221; moments before they were to walk down the aisle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was a\u00a0scenario brother Michael simply hadn&#8217;t envisioned when they were teens. &#8220;We were always, you know, being together most of the time, and her following behind me\u2014I taught her to drive,&#8221; he explained to in a 2013 interview with Oprah Winfrey. &#8220;We played together\u2014everything that you do together as you&#8217;re growing up\u2014and then when you get into drugs, you do that together too and it just got out of hand.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To put it mildly. In her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/celebritynews\/6191965\/Whitney-Houston-confesses-to-Oprah-Winfrey-my-drug-hell-on-crack-cocaine.html\" target=\"_blank\">own interview with Winfrey<\/a>, years before her death, Whitney would confess to lacing joints with cocaine and spending days and nights watching TV and getting high with Brown, at one point not changing out of her pajamas for some seven months. By\u00a0the mid-00s, according to the documentary\u00a0<em>Whitney<\/em>, the couple had set up a make-shift craft den in the bathroom of their Atlanta Home\u2014right around the time Whitney was famously declaring to <strong>Diane Sawyer<\/strong> that &#8220;crack is whack.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"text-12\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"61.57556675063\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-text-only\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\" readability=\"18.138539042821\">\n<p>It was her most memorable line, to be sure, but perhaps not her most troubling. In a 2000 <em>Jane<\/em> profile (she showed up four hours late to the accompanying photo shoot), she was asked the difference between spending time with a president (by that point she&#8217;d met both <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/george_hw_bush\">George H.W. Bush<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/bill_clinton\">Bill Clinton<\/a><\/strong>) and a junkie. Her response: &#8220;Just the same. The president gets off on the country. The junkie gets off on a couple of hits.&#8221; The next year, after she canceled an appearance at a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/michael_jackson\">Michael Jackson<\/a><\/strong> event, rumors surfaced that she had overdosed and died.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Brown was often\u00a0labeled as the instigator in\u00a0the star&#8217;s downfall, <em>Whitney: Can I Be Me<\/em> director <strong>Nick Broomfield<\/strong> sees it differently. &#8220;It&#8217;s not like Bobby is a bad person,&#8221; he\u00a0explained in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/the-sad-secret-life-of-whitney-houston-1.3105861\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Irish Times<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s just that Bobby and Whitney were unable to support each other, constructively. Instead, they enabled each other. They were totally besotted with each other. But they were unable to support each other in order to change. I think their close friends saw that. Bobby wasn&#8217;t a terrible person. Whitney wasn&#8217;t a terrible person. They just couldn&#8217;t change while they were together. The shift was noticeable at a 2009 <em>Good Morning America<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/news\/whitney-houston-stumbles-during-good-morning-america-taping-20090901\" target=\"_blank\">performance<\/a> in NYC&#8217;s Central Park and in the mixed reviews of her &#8220;Nothing but Love&#8221;\u00a0tour that followed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By then, loved one were already fearing the worst. As make-up artist Lavar said in <em>Whitney: Can I Be Me<\/em>, &#8220;For 10 years or so I started waiting for the phone call that we all eventually got.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When it came through, Whitney had been making a play at a comeback. She had just wrapped work on her role in the <em>Sparkle<\/em> remake,\u00a0playing the\u00a0mom to\u00a0<em>American Idol<\/em> champ <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/jordin_sparks\">Jordin Sparks<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0and on the evening of Feb.\u00a07, 2012 she had shown up\u2014on time\u2014to the studio to record her side of their duet, &#8220;Celebrate.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-14\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"42.505230125523\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"25.700836820084\">\n<p>As producer <strong>Harvey Mason Jr.<\/strong> noted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2012\/06\/whitney-houston-death-bathtub-drugs-rehab\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a>, &#8220;She was way more energetic than the young people, more excited to be in the studio, more passionate to make something outstanding.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Four days later, she\u00a0woke up in her presidential junior suite at The\u00a0Beverly Hilton, the site of Davis&#8217; annual pre-Grammy shindig\u00a0where she was set to perform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her assistant, Mary Jones, laid a dress out on the bed,\u00a0then stepped out to pick up a second option from Neiman Marcus. When she returned, shortly after 3:30 p.m., Houston was facedown in the bathtub. Paramedics were called, CPR was administered, but to no avail.\u00a0The singer&#8217;s death would later be attributed to accidental drowning, heart disease and cocaine use. An open bottle of champagne and a spoon containing\u00a0what the coroner&#8217;s report called a &#8220;white crystal like substance&#8221;\u00a0were\u00a0spotted at the scene\u00a0and traces of a muscle relaxant, Xanax, Benadryl and marijuana were found in her system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"photo-txt-15\" data-hook=\"scrollable-block\" readability=\"47.224523612262\">\n<section data-textblock-tracking=\"text-block-photo-text\" readability=\"37.779618889809\">\n<p>Downstairs, as distraught luminaries such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/tony_bennett\">Tony Bennett<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/diana_ross\">Diana Ross<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/britney_spears\">Britney Spears<\/a><\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/mary_j_blige\">Mary J. Blige<\/a><\/strong> arrived, the party commenced, the superstar&#8217;s loved ones insisting they celebrate. &#8220;Simply put, Whitney would have\u00a0wanted\u00a0the music to go on,&#8221; Davis told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-whitneyhouston-clivedavis-idUSTRE81B09520120213\" target=\"_blank\">partygoers<\/a>,\u00a0&#8220;and her family\u00a0asked that we carry\u00a0on.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Whitney has taken her final bow, her greatest legacy\u2014that ability to entertain,\u00a0that propensity to stun crowds, that <em>voice<\/em>\u2014continues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I, like every singer, always wanted to be just like her,&#8221; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/beyonce\">Beyonc\u00e9<\/a><\/strong> stated after Houston died. &#8220;Her voice was perfect. Strong but soothing. Soulful and classic. Her vibrato, her cadence, her control. So many of my life&#8217;s memories are attached to a Whitney Houston song. She is our queen and she opened doors and provided a blueprint for all of us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And for all her flaws there&#8217;s something innately endearing about the person Whitney was\u2014beyond the music. &#8220;She had a huge story,&#8221; Pat tells E!
